The PSTricks project was started by Timothy Van Zandt long time ago and is
one of the oldest \TeX\ packages still in use. `I started in 1991.
Initially I was just trying to develop tools for my own use. Then I
thought it would be nice to package them so that others could use them. It
soon became tempting to add lots of features, not just the ones I needed.
When this became so interesting that it interfered with my day ``job'', I
gave up the project ``cold turkey'', in 1994.' --- Timothy Van Zandt
