file handles are released when the program exits. No exit, no
release.

From: Robin Fairbairns <Robin.Fairbairns@computer-lab.cambridge.ac.uk>
Subject: Announcement: Lamport, 2nd edition available to UKTUG members

A limited number of copies of Lamport's "LaTeX, a Document Preparation
System", 2nd edition, have been supplied to UKTUG members. If you are a
member of UKTUG, you too can send an order for the book to

  UKTeX User Group
  c/o 1 Eymore Close
  Selly Oak
  Birmingham B29 4LB

together with a cheque payable to UKTUG for 24.00 pounds

This service is offered by Peter Abbott, who is UK TUG treasurer; he does
not hold stocks of books, they are despatched directly from Addison-Wesley
on receipt of an order from Peter. When books are ordered, Peter
appreciates notification of delivery as he withholds payment until he
knows that the goods have been delivered undamaged.

This offer is *only* available to members of UKTUG (this is a condition
imposed on us by Addison-Wesley), I'm afraid. Since Peter also maintains
our membership records, it's not easy to pull the wool over his eyes...

Those who are *not* UK TUG members are welcome to join to take advantage
of this offer -- mail UKTuG-Enquiries@tex.ac.uk, or pull a formatted
membership form by anon ftp from
  ftp.cl.cam.ac.uk:/users/rf/uktug/membership.<r>ps.gz
where <r> is the resolution of your printer (300, 400 or 600).

Bookshops may have copies by now, I'm told that the ISBN is 0-201-52983-1

From: Frank Bennett <fbennett@clus1.ulcc.ac.uk>
Subject: The announce: release of LexiTeX 2.0b

Announcing the release of LexiTeX 2.0b. LexiTeX is a LaTeX style
that permits the handling of citations in a way similar to BibTeX;
a list of citations can be maintained, and references in the text
can be by way of nickname references to the list.

Differences between LexiTeX and BibTeX include:

  - LexiTeX citations must be written in a special syntax.
  - Citations appear in the text or in footnotes, rather
than in an appended bibliography (although tables of
authorities can be generated); full citation cross-referencing
    is supported.
  - In-text citations appear in the document on the first pass
(tables of authorities require running makeindex and a second
    pass).
  - Citations may be entered directly into the document.

Version 2.0b of LexiTeX has been placed in the /incoming
directory of ftp.tex.ac.uk.

New features of this release include:

  - a list of citation declarations can be included at the
    top of a document.
  - the entire distribution is now in `doc' format, and the
documentation is much simplified and *much* improved.
  - a bug that caused {\em supra} to be used instead of
{\em id.} under some conditions has been fixed.

In this distribution, the manual is accurate, the code is
up to date (one minor bug fix is pending), and the code
commentary is in need of some revision.

Further and better particulars are contained in the distribution.
Anyone with an interest in bibliography packages is encouraged to have
a look; comments are welcomed.

Each set comes with an installation guide, and (at least)
full TeX and Metafont, a previewer, a PostScript driver, and
CM fonts. Two update disks a year will be sent out
automatically, with the current version of LaTeXe, and other
goodies. A subscription service will be available for
subsequent years. In addition, subscribers can request up to
3 disks a year with any material from the CTAN archives, but
this will be supplied `as is', without instructions.

    OzTeX and emTeX are also available on disk from TeX Users Group;
    mail TUG for details.
