I have become rather confused as to how to retrieve the contents of
files with the .zip_vve suffix. In the past I have only ever
transferred .zip files from the archive with no problem. Can you
advice me on how to unzip, unencode these .zip_vve files.

Thank you.....Bob Stewart, University of Strathclyde

History: In the (original) UK TeX archive, we have always had a
problem getting the VMS file format of binary files correct so that
coloured book software could transfer them. In the past, we fixed
files by hand. But now that the Daughter archive is talking
automatically to other archive machines, and updating things on a
daily basis, we dont have manpower to go in and fix up files on the
VMS system; and we have not found a way of mirroring the Unix archive
to the VMS system to end up with the file types we need. Therefore, we
made a pragmatic decision to store all files on the VMS system in
plain ASCII form, by encoding the binaries (including .zip files).
Because of the special problems of VMS file formats, none of the
existing encoders was good enough, so Neil Kempson wrote VVCODE.

Action: You need a copy of vvdecode to unpack x.zip_vve. You can find
the relevant program source (in C, carefully tested to be portable) in
[.archive-tools.vvcode], and compiled binary versions in
[.archive-tools.vvcode.binaries] for various systems.

Please contact us if you have problems with all this; we need your
patience and understanding getting this new system reliable. If you
are interested in VVCODE details, do *not* however contact the
archivists direct, but join a list called VVCODE-L by sending a
message

Try the C-NO-WEB package of macros. They take a C program as input
and sets it. TeX commands can be included in the comments of the C
program to control output.

A copy exists at Aston in the directory:

Subject: Problems with Sun4 TeX binaries -- whom to contact?

Being too lazy to build TeX from scratch for myself, I recently
downloaded the Sun4 binaries (for which effusive thanks) from Aston.
All is well EXCEPT that mf appears to want a reference to
_mf_x11_initscreen satisfied by a shared library, and it isn't. (There
were other problems, both with mf and with xdvi, but they went away
when I got hold of X11R5 shared libraries for the Sun4.) What's my next
step (other than tangling with web and rebuilding things against the
libraries I actually have)?

I'm running SunOS 4.1.3 and OpenWindows 3.0, by the way.

(Please reply to me directly -- I don't subscribe to the list, only
seeing the digest on netnews. Thanks.)

i know what you mean; i will not do anything about it immediately (nor
do I have an easy answer to suggest) because I want to recompile the
whole thing again with the current web2c setup. When I do that, I
think the most sensible thing will be to compile MF *without* X
support at all, and let those people who want that do a recompile. the
alternative is to build everything with static libraries which I
might do.

that *is* your next step. should be no more than "configure; make MF"
in the source directory

what an honour to have the "british-national-corpus" on board....

Here is another trivial question: Can anybody tell me how to stop table
and figure captions from floating about!!? How can you force tables into
a certion position? The commands [h], [b], etc. do not work with me (I
am using Emtex version 3.0 [3a] and lLatex 2.09).
Any suggestions??

captions, or the whole figure? tables and figures are *supposed* to
float! dont use that construct if you want to put in tabular material
or illustrations just HERE.

 > a certion position? The commands [h], [b], etc. do not work with me (I

they do work, but the interaction with the half-dozen of so parameters
about floats which you can set are complex. you might want to look at
"here.sty" for a a new qualifier [H] which really does work.

Subject: DVIPS on the Mac?

I have seen in various editions of the TeX newsletter lots
of rumours of dvips for Macintoshes being available ``real-
soon-now''. Do you or anyone know of working version? OzTeX
has a good dvi-to-ps driver, but it cannot handle pstricks
(especially rotation which seminar.sty uses). Textures driver
can handle pstricks (but not the latest version, yet) but
is so incredibly s-l-o-w and keeps producing 27Mbyte postscript
files which blow our print queues! Thus dvips on a mac would
be terribly useful!

if asked, I would have said "talk to Derek Andrews at
Leicester, he has a student porting dvips to the Mac"!

since the source has 10 or 20 #ifdef __THINK__ already in, i assume it is
ready to roll with Think C. What happens when you try to compile it?

Subject: Annual TUG meeting.

I have today received by post the announcement and booking form for
the Aston Conference. It contains no hint whatsoever of the content
of the conference - number of papers, categories, not even names of
keynote speakers (who have surely been booked), or the start and
end times on the Monday and Friday. In other words, I am asked to
book 100pounds + ? accommodation for a pig in a poke. Most "5 day"
conferences use the first and last days as only half days, to allow
travel. If overseas visitors are expected to come for courses, will
they be willing to hang around for two and a half days between conference
and course? Is it expected that all conference delegates will attend
for the full 5 days? Have even speakers been informed whether their
papers have been accepted?

Am I alone in thinking that sendout this mailing with no programme
information is likely to be a fruitless and counter-productive exercise?

I note your concern, but you will appreciate that the deadline
for acceptance of papers at Tug93 was the end of February, and the
form was prepared before then (despite delay in reaching your desk).
This meeting is not an unknown quantity - it is 14th in a regular
series of conferences held for members of the Tex Users Group (it
isn't an open meeting), which all have a similar format of
presentations and discussions and courses about, yes you guessed it,
TeX.

i dont share your confidence that if i had said
 July 25th 9.30 Professor F Bar "TeX and Word - a comparison"
that this would free you from disappointment... but we will of course
circulate names of speakers when the list is finalized

probably, because they will need to spend a weekend for airfares,
often

well, yes, of course! its just the same as all the other TUG
conferences have been....

please contact the conference program committee if they have not replied to you

not alone, perhaps, but people *are* booking already because they know
that anyone interested in TeX is guarenteed a week of interaction with
like-minded souls, catching up on all the newest developments and
getting new ideas. and the price is low, too. Me, i think its worth it
just to see King Lear in company of a few hundred TeXies

 > I'm looking forward to attending, but I can't book on this basis.

you'll be very welcome whenever you book.

Subject: AUC TeX version 7.0

There has been a major new release of the AUC-TeX gnuemacs lisp
package for editing TeX documents. It can be found in

 ftp.tex.ac.uk:pub/archive/support/auctex
 tex.ac.uk:[tex-archive.support.auctex]

and (imminently) on the Stuttgart and SHSU archives with which Aston
works. A short description is appended for those who are not aware of
the package.

Sebastian

Author=Kresten Krab Thorup
Description=AUC-TeX is a comprehensive customizable integrated environment for
writing input files for LaTeX using GNU Emacs.
AUC-TeX lets you run TeX/LaTeX and other LaTeX-related tools, such as
a output filters or post processor from inside Emacs. Especially
`running LaTeX' is interesting, as AUC-TeX let's you browse through
the errors TeX reported, while it moves the cursor directly to the
reported error, and displays some documentation for that particular
error. This will even work when the document is spread over several
  files.
AUC-TeX automatically indents your `LaTeX-source', not only as you
write it---you can also let it indent and format an entire document.
It has a special outline feature, which can greatly help you `getting
  the overview' of a document.
Apart from these special features, AUC-TeX provides an large range of
handy Emacs macros, which in several different ways can help you
write your LaTeX documents fast and painless.
All features of AUC-TeX are documented using the GNU Emacs online
documentation system. That is, documentation for any command is just
  a key click away!
AUC-TeX is written entirely in Emacs-Lisp, and hence you can easily
add new features for your own needs. It was not made as part of any
particular employment or project (apart from the AUC-TeX project
itself). AUC-TeX is distributed under the `GNU Emacs General Public
License' and may therefore almost freely be copied and redistributed.

Subject: archiving and encoding methods in the UK TeX Archive

The announcement of AUC-TeX version 7.0 prompts me to ask all users of
the TeX Archive to be aware of four bits of information that might
affect your lives:

 a) The two UK TeX Archive machines, ftp.tex.ac.uk (Daughter) and
tex.ac.uk (Dad), are now working in tandem. Daughter acts as the
master (mirroring material from other sites) and copies changed
files to Dad every night. the directory structures are identical,
and are also used in the Stuttgart and SHSU archives.

 b) because of the needs of JANET file transfer users, all binary
files (includes font metrics, PKs etc) are stored *encoded* on
Dad, using the VVCODE program. You need a copy of vvdecode to
unpack them. See [.archive-tools.vvcode.binaries] for your poison
(sorry, not for Macs yet. on its way).

 c) The archiving method of choice in the archive is the public domain
ZIP. This is compatible with PKZIP 2.x, but *not* with the older
(and very common) pkzip 1.x. You *must* upgrade your unzipper soon
    to take advantage of things

 d) for good or bad, many packages end up being wrapped up as Unix
compressed tar archives, since this is how their authors maintain
them; we pick them automatically from the authors and do not have
the resources to repackage them. Tools for decompression and
detarring for most systems can be found in [.archive-tools] on Dad
and pub/archive/archive-tools on Daughter. BUT you should also
know that Unix compress (.Z suffix) is being commonly replaced by
the Free Software Foundation's replacement, gzip (suffix .z).
Since the Vax (Dad) has case-insensitive filenames, you cannot
tell the difference if you retrieve from Dad. MORAL - dont mail us
to say "this package is corrupt" until you have tried gzip as well
as uncompress on it. gzip is (naturally) also in the archive-tools
    directory.

There is a school of thought that the archivists plot to make your
life a misery. This is true. But please remember we are driven by a)
market forces (people want up to date copies of things) and b) poverty
(we have no labour to convert things).

Subject: TeX archive gopher works a little more as it oughta

Those of you who use Gopher will be familiar with the what happens if
you choose item 1 after connecting to ftp.tex.ac.uk:

         1. Welcome.
         2. Archive directory/
         3. Indexed FTP (Directories names only) of UK TeX Archive <?>
         4. Indexed FTP of UK TeX Archive <?>
--> 5. Indexed access to archive hierarchy <?>
         6. Other Archives/
         7. TeX Font Samples/
         8. UK-TeX.
         9. WAIS database: TeX --- list of FTP sites with TeX material <?>
         10. WAIS database: TeX Frequently Asked Questions (UK specific) <?>
         11. WAIS database: TeX index of styles and macros (by David Jones) <?>
         12. WAIS database: The TeX Book <?>
         13. WAIS database: back issues of TeXhax, 1986 -- <?>
         14. WAIS database: back issues of UKTeX newsletter <?>

Items 3, 4 and 5 provide an indexed access to the archive, which you
should use when trying to find a file. 3 and 4 provide an ftp-based system
for you to get the files you need, but 5 just gets the material
directly from the archive in normal gopher way. Until today, it *didnt
work for binary files* (why nobody complained, I do not know :-}). Now
it works properly. Binary files (zip, exe, tar.Z etc) will be properly
marked as such and your gopher client will download correctly.

Sebastian

PS thanks to Phil Taylor for accidentally showing me this
long-standing problem.

Subject: CMBB (blackboard variants to CM) on FILESERV/Niord

Gilles F. Robert <gfrobert@fourier.grenet.fr> recently announced the
availability of his blackboard variant to Computer Modern fonts on INFO-TeX
(and was looking for a network home for them). Rainer Schoepf retrieved
the files and has placed them in the fonts/cm/cmbb area of the TeX archives
at Stuttgart (they should propagate soon to ftp.tex.ac.uk in the same
location). I retrieved the files from Rainer and have placed them in the
CMBB package on FILESERV and in the [FILESERV.CMBB] directories on Niord.
Attached is the FILESERV description of the package.

                                   ----
The CMBB package includes a UUENCODEd ZIP archive containing the Metafont
sources for Gilles F. Robert's <gfrobert@fourier.grenet.fr> 'Blackboard'
variant to Computer Modern fonts. The whole package contains five 'main'
files:
 - blbbase.mf (the 'base') contains the supplementary definitions needed
   for double stems etc..
 - blbord.mf (the 'driver') is fairly simpleand only makes the necessary
   calls.
 - blbordu.mf (based on romanu.mf): programs for uppercase letters.
 - blbordl.mf (based on romanl.mf): programs for lowercase letters.
 - blbordsp.mf (based on romand.mf and punct.mf): programs for the digits~1
and~2 and for parentheses and brackets.

To retrieve the 4 part distribution, include:
 SENDME CMBB
in the body of a mail message to FILESERV@SHSU.BITNET (FILESERV@SHSU.edu).
The ZIP archive of this distribution are available for anonymous ftp
retrieval from Niord.SHSU.edu (192.92.115.8) in the directory
[FILESERV.CMBB] as CMBB-SOURCES.ZIP and the individual files of the
distribution are in the directory [FILESERV.CMBB-CMBB-SOURCES].
