Subject: spurious inability to find TFM file

Background:
- ----------
I have a large book (550 pages) with many included files, and zillions
of cross-references, done with LaTeX, and a Times font. Since its a
PS font, I load the same tfm file many times at different sizes. Its
been running through for ages using emTeX386 under OS/2.

Yesterday
- ---------
LaTeX starts to tell me it cannot locate TFM files (ones where it has
already found the same file `at' a different size already), half way
through a second pass on the book. It seems to be random. Sometimes a
\input fails too (eg of `null.tex'!). One gets desperate. One finds
the odd error. One finds a float which was sticking in the gullet for
100 pages (but eventually appearing). After a few such problems are
corrected, LaTeX stops whinging

Question
- --------
What situations cause TeX to fail to open new files, specifically TFM
files? does anyone else ever meet such a situation? is it a bit of jam
in my computer's memory? aliens from Mars?

Doubtless you are using a C implementation, which by now we know is patently
incapable of detecting when things have gone seriously wrong. Recommend
you revert to the canonical Pascal version, with full error checking
enabled, whereupon you will almost certainly find you have exhausted some
vital resource. CAR may be able to shed some light: after enormous effort,
he tracked down a bug in LaTeX which was causing floats to stick in the
old oesophagous.

At what point does TeX staticise the values of things such as \medmuskip?
If I write the following:

        $ \realmedmuskip = \medmuskip
          \medmuskip = \thickmuskip
          x \mathchar "213C y
          \medmuskip = \realmedmuskip
          x \mathchar "213C y
        $

I appear to get the same spacing around the two `<'s. So it would seem
that TeX staticises the muskips at end-of-maths, which I confess is
quite reasonable, but is it defined anywhere?

                                        Philip Taylor, RHBNC.

i think your interpretation of the ?'statistication'
is correct, and rather parallels the selction of fonts
n'est-ce pas (in maths), see page 153 TB. only a
guess.

Subject: additions to UK (Internet/Daughter) archive

I have made some additions to the Internet archive on ftp.tex.ac.uk:

pub/archive/macros/latex/styles/contrib/covington:

covingtn.sty Michael Covington's TeX macros for glossed sentences,
                numbered examples, discourse representation theory,
                feature structures, etc.

pub/archive/support/xetal:
   another de-TeXifying program (lex/yacc)

pub/archive/systems/os2/binaries:
VV-encoded binary images for OS/2 of
     dvips, afm2tfm, lacheck, ps2pk etc

pub/archive/fonts/monotype:
for all the fonts on the Monotype CD (which is on a good cheap offer to UK
academic sites) have been named in accordance with Karl Berry's
scheme, to make `short names' for TeX purposes. A complete set of
TFM and VF files for your delectation. Yes, you do have to buy the
CD to get the fonts themselves, and rename the .pfb files to these
names, but after that its trivial to use them in a TeX document. Go
wild, buy the CD and set your next paper in Zeitgeist-Bold

Subject: updates on UK TeX Internet archive

I have updated some dvi drivers in the UK TeX Internet archive on
ftp.tex.ac.uk.

pub/archive/dviware/neumann - replaced by pub/archive/dviware/dvi2xx
(version 050); includes updated source and executables for DOS and
OS/2. A test 0.51 version is also there. This, for those unfamiliar
with the package, is what you want if you have a LaserJet printer
attached to a Unix machine, or don't like dvihplj in emTeX.

pub/archive/dviware/dvi2pcl - dvi to PCL converter, ie another dvi to
LaserJet driver

I have placed version 1.06 (December 22) of David Jones' Index of TeX
macros and styles in two places:

 ftp.tex.ac.uk: pub/archive/help/tex-styles-and-macros.txt
 uk.ac.tex: [.doc]index.txt

Subject: another de-TeX program

I have put this untex in the Uk TeX Internet Archive in
pub/archive/support/untex

sebastian

As detex is mentioned, I'd like to add a hint to untex.
I wrote it as a replacement for detex. It doesn't check \input or
\includ'ed files, but does IMHO a better job stripping TeX commands.

It compiles under many C compilers as gcc, cc (AIX and hpux tested),
   MS cl, Turbo C....

Subject: some new LaTeX minor style files in UK TeX Internet archive

I have added some missing items to the UK TeX Internet archive on
ftp.tex.ac.uk in pub/archive/macros/latex/styles/contrib. brief
descriptions follow, but see the real item for details and authors.

psboxit.sty
This package enables to put a PostScript drawing behind a TeX box.
The drawing is parametrized by the position and the size of the
 TeX box.

diamondpar.sty
 do diamond-shaped TeX paragraphs

moreverb.sty
adds various verbatim environments using Rainer Sch\"opf's new verbatim
 environment.

letterspace.sty
space out a TeX box with extra letter spacing (by Phil Taylor)

layout2.sty
visualize your LaTeX page layout parameters

ifthen-addi.sty
 extensions to standard "ifthen.sty"

draftcopy.sty
Prints a large "DRAFT" diagonally across each page; this REQUIRES the
 dvips driver
