============================================================
Monotype TimesNR font pack
============================================================
2005-06-01
Walter Schmidt
w-a-schmidt(at)gmx.net
This collection comprises tfm, vf, fd and font mapping files
to use the Monotype TimesNR family of Type1 fonts with TeX
on the Un*x or PC platform. It does, however, _not_ include
the actual Type1 fonts, which are to be purchased from
Agfa-Monotype. In order to support separate design sizes
and real small capitals, the following Type1 fonts are
required:
TimesNRMT
TimesNRExpertMT
TimesNRMT-Italic
TimesNRMT-Bold
TimesNRMT-BoldItalic
TimesNRSevenMT
TimesNRSevenMT-Italic
TimesNRSevenMT-Bold
TimesNRSevenMT-BoldItalic
TimesSmallTextMT
TimesSmallTextMT-Italic
TimesSmallTextMT-Bold
The below installation instructions assume a TDS-compliant
TeX system, such as teTeX, fpTeX, MikTeX or VTeX/Free. The
directory name "texmf" refers to the root directory of the
TDS directory tree. In case your TeX systems has more than
one such directory tree, the documentation should tell you
where to install new files.
History

with minor corrections to the kerning data;
2004-09-17
virtual fonts remade using latest fontinst;
improved fd files;
TFMs for OT1 encoded fonts are assigned "traditional"
(non-KB) names;
Type1 font files are to be renamed to follow KB scheme

preliminary release
Updating from the preliminary 2004-01-11 release
------------------------------------------------
As compared with the preliminary release, a number of file
names as well as the font mapping tables have been changed.
Please, remove that release _entirely_ before installing the
current one, and remove the obsolete font mapping data from
the configuration.
Installing the TimesNR Type1 fonts
----------------------------------
You need not repeat this step, when updating from the
2004-09-17 release!
The Type1 (.pfb) font files, as supplied by Monotype, are to
be renamed for use with TeX:
Font name: File name (Monotype): File name (TeX)
TimesNRSevenMT-BoldItalic svbi____.pfb mntbi8a7.pfb
TimesNRSevenMT-Bold svb_____.pfb mntb8a7.pfb
TimesNRSevenMT-Italic svi_____.pfb mntri8a7.pfb
TimesNRSevenMT sv______.pfb mntr8a7.pfb
TimesNRMT-BoldItalic timbi___.pfb mntbi8a.pfb
TimesNRMT-Bold timb____.pfb mntb8a.pfb
TimesNRMT-Italic timi____.pfb mntri8a.pfb
TimesNRMT tim_____.pfb mntr8a.pfb
TimesSmallTextMT-Bold tstb____.pfb mntb8a5.pfb
TimesSmallTextMT-Italic tsti____.pfb mntri8a5.pfb
TimesSmallTextMT tst_____.pfb mntr8a5.pfb
TimesNRExpertMT tiy_____.pfb mntr8x.pfb
Copy them to the directory
texmf/fonts/type1/monotype/timesnew/
of your TeX system
The related .afm files should go into the directory
texmf/fonts/afm/monotype/timesnew/
with file names changed correspondingly.
Installing the support files
----------------------------
Unpack the ZIP archive mnt.zip in the directory "texmf"
of your TeX system; thus, all files will be copied to the
appropriate directories.
Updating the filename database
------------------------------
Certain TeX systems require manually updating of a "filename
database" after adding of new files. Please, consult the
documentation of your TeX system!
Configuring your TeX system
---------------------------
You need not repeat this step, when updating from the
2004-09-17 release!
The present distribution includes several font map files for
the Monotype TimesNR fonts. You need to configure your TeX
system so that an appropriate files are actually used. The
required steps depend on the particular TeX system.
Particular sets of instructions are provided below for the
following systems:
* teTeX
* VTeX/Free
With other TeX systems such as MikTeX, consult the related
documentation how to install an additional font map file.
The name of the map file to be used for TimesNR is
"mnt.map". Two copies of this file reside in the
directories texmf/dvips/config and texmf/fonts/map/dvips.
Configuring teTeX
-----------------
Use the shell script "updmap" to add the font map file named
"mnt.map" to the configuration. See the documentation of
your particular teTeX version how to use the script. With
teTeX 2.0 and above, execute the following commands:
texhash
updmap --enable Map mnt.map
Configuring VTeX/Free
---------------------
Make VTeX read the additional font map ("aliasing") file
mnt.ali. This is usually accomplished by putting a record
for this file into each of the configuration files
texmf/vtex/config/pdf.fm
and
texmf/vtex/config/ps.fm
"mnt.ali" is to be added to the TYPE1 section of the
above-mentioned files:
TYPE1 {
...
mnt.ali
}
Using the TimesNR fonts with TeX
--------------------------------
See the file timesnew.txt, which should now reside in the
directory texmf/doc/fonts/monotype/.
Known problems
--------------
The kerning tables of the TimesNR fonts exhibit several
deficiences, affecting accented characters and letter pairs
that are common in languages other than English.
These flaws were not corrected in the TeX font metrics fo far.
Legal notice
------------
The "Monotype TimesNR font pack" is made up from the files
mnt.txt and mnt.zip.
