WinEdt Dictionaries
===================

By default WinEdt comes with a set of dictionaries for American
and British English. These dictionaries are already installed in
WinEdt's Dict\English folder. However, you may want to read the
document English.txt in the above mentioned folder and make a few
choices pertaining to different spelling rules and available
alternatives...

If you are writing in more than one language you should also
consult the document "Modes.txt" in WinEdt's Doc folder to see how
you should best take advantage of WinEdt's ability to tie
dictionaries to submodes.

If you want to add a new dictionary to WinEdt, create a
sub-directory in "Dict" with the name of the dictionary itself.
E.g., if you want to add the Russian dictionary "ru.dic" (which is
inside "ru.zip"), then you would place it in the directory
"Dict\ru". Some dictionaries (for example DE.zip) might do this
for you automatically when un-packing.

WinEdt can use up to 255 different dictionaries simultaneously.
You can specify to which dictionary new words are to be inserted
and more. This makes network installations easier. Read the online
help in Dictionary Manager Dialog for more guidelines...

 Hi. The Portuguese (Brazil) word list, in BR.dic file, was generated using the ISPELL spell checker, and its Brazilian package, maintained mainly by Ricardo Ueda <ueda@ime.usp.br>. In GPL, BR.dic can be distributed, but have to be FREE. The credits for the creation of this word list goes to Sadao Massago <smassago@icmc.sc.usp.br> The credits for ISPELL can be found at the ISPELL home page <fmg-www.cs.ucla.edu/ficus-members/geoff/ispell.html > The credits for the Brazilian package for ISPELL can be found at <http://www.ime.usp.br/~ueda/br.ispell> For further information, read the section on "How To Generate Word Lists" below... Have a nice day. Miguel Vinicius Santini Frasson ============================================================= How to generate word lists using the ISPELL spell checker. ============================================================= You can get ispell from http://fmg-www.cs.ucla.edu/ficus-members/geoff/ispell.html * Required files - ispell (of course) - radicals file - affixs file The dictionary file (.hash or .has) of ispell is generated by buildhas program, using the radicals file (without a default extension) and the affixs file (.aff). The buildhas command line is bulidhas [radicals file] [affixs file .aff] [dictionary file .has] Look at README file to see what is the radicals file. With the .has (or .hash) and .aff files in hand, you can generate the word list by the command line: (UNIX) cat [radical] | ispell -e -d [dictionary] | tr " " "\n" |sort| uniq > [wordlist] where: [radical] -> path and name of the radicals file. [dictionary] -> path and name of the .has (or .hash) file. [wordlist] -> path and name of the word list file. tr " " "\n" -> replaces the spaces by a "new line" character. uniq -> eliminates repeated lines. (DOS) type [radical] | ispell -e -d [dictionary] > [wordlist] Under Dos, you get list of words, but with similar words in the same line. You can do a simple program to replace spaces by a "new line" command. You have to use WinEdt' Sort Lines dialog (Tools menu) to sort as WinEdt dictionary and remove repeated words. This method of obtaining word lists is based in the makefile included in the Portuguese ispell dictionary source distributed by http://www.ime.usp.br/~ueda/br.ispell/ \ No newline at end of file

This is the Read-Me file for "de.zip".

The new German (base) dictionary from May 1998 is now called
"de.dic", as was the first version dating back to early 1997 (or
so). Its successors were "de3.dic" and "de2.dic". We decided to
switch back to the old name because this version is a new start,
from which update possibilities will be provided.

"de.zip" contains many files. One is the base dictionary, called
"de.dic". The file "de.dic" is accompanied by two other files,
namely "remove.dic" and "addon.dic", which contain words that are
to be removed from "de.dic" (discovered errors) or to be added to
"de.dic" (missing words) respectively. The base directory of these
three files is the sub-directory "de" of WinEdt's "dict"
directory.

With "de.dic" (also inside "de.zip") come various additional
dictionaries. All are grouped together in the sub-directory
"additional" of the directory "de". Some of the additional
dictionaries do not contain any words, they are just there to be
filled in the future.

 A SET OF DICTIONARIES FOR AMERICAN AND BRITISH ENGLISH

In the WinEdt directory on CTAN, there are a number of contributed
dictionaries for spell checking in several languages. For English one
has the choice between UK.dic and US.dic. However, I have found these,
especially UK.dic, to be unsatisfactory for a number of reasons.

1. The UK dictionary is missing many important words beginning with "m"
 for some reason. There was an email at some time mentioning how the
 file was corrupted at some point.

2. It contains many more 2 and 3 letter combinations than US.dic,
 combinations that do not seem like any words that I know.

3. UK.dic accepts both -ize and -ise versions of words like "maximize";
 this is indeed correct for British English, but in any single work,
 a consistent spelling must be used; hence one must decide for one or
 the other and the spell checker should be switchable accordingly.

4. The US.dic is rigidly American, and does not conform to my personal
 (Canadian) style, which is a mixture of US and UK. In fact, the
 distinction between American and British spelling is not so
 straightforward as one might think. See below.

5. The US.dic is prudish, missing some very fundamental four-letter
 words, which are to be found in UK.dic.

What is American and what is British spelling anyway?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are five categories of words in English with spelling variants; the
differences are often referred to as US or UK, but as the table below
illustrates, this is not so clear cut.
I designate the five categories with a representative word from each:
 color/colour
 labeled/labelled
 center/centre
 maximize/maximise
 analyze/analyse
In each case, I give what is normally considered American first, then
the form normally considered British. However, checking with the
Webster's and Oxford dictionaries, one finds that the following are
permitted (the preferred form is given first):
 Webster (US) Oxford (UK)
 color colour
 labeled/labelled labelled
 center centre/center
 maximize maximize/maximise
 analyze analyse
This shows that we could agree on labelled, center, maximize, and only
need to quarrel about color/colour and analyze/analyse. (This is my own personal style,
where I settle for "colour" and "analyse".)
(Consider the origin of this word. The Latin is "color, coloris", so that
"color" is indeed the true original word. The English "colour" comes from the
French "couleur". The same applies to "honour/honor". More interesting is
"neighbour/neighbor" which is not a Latin root at all, but a Germanic one. It
is related to the German "Nachbar" (literally "the one beside" but which
translates exactly as "neighbour". So why is the "u" there at all? English is
weird!)
More flexibility is needed in the spell checker than that provided by
only two dictionary files.
My solution: 11 files
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I have taken UK.dic and US.dic, merged them, extracted the words in the
four categories, placing them 8 additional dictionary files.
 eng_com.dic (150843 words with no alternative spellings)
 colour.dic and color.dic (366 words with -our/-or variant)
 labelled.dic and labeled.dic (326 words with -ell-/-el- variant)
 centre.dic and center.dic (85 words with -re/-er variant)
 ize.dic and ise.dic (3387 words with -ize/-ise variant)
 yze.dic and yse.dic (87 words with -yze/-yse variant)

Six of these files must be loaded each time: eng_com.dic and one of
each pair. One uses the WinEdt dictionary manager to activate as one
pleases. Alternatively, one could use them to make up one big
dictionary of the combination that one desires. I do provide ready-to-run
installations, see below.

There are 32 possible combinations, but I only see 4 realistic ones:
 strict American: color, labeled, center, ize, yze
 liberal American: color, labelled, center, ize, yze
 liberal British: colour, labelled, center, ize, yse
 strict British: colour, labelled, centre, ise, yse

I set up WinEdt (32 bit version with modes and submodes) with submodes
UK and US, to append to main modes TeX and ANSI. My default is liberal
British, but strict British and strict American are optionally there.
The filters for the 11 dictionaries are thus:

eng_com.dic * (always active)
color.dic US (only for US TeX files)
colour.dic *|US (for all but US TeX files)
labeled.dic US (only for US TeX files)
labelled.dic *|US (for all but US TeX files)
center.dic *|UK (for all but UK TeX files)
centre.dic UK (only for UK TeX files)
ize.dic *|UK (for all but UK TeX files)
ise.dic UK (only for UK TeX files)
yze.dic US (only for US TeX files)
yse.dic *|US (for all but US TeX files)

In fact, my situation is more complex because I also have submodes DE and NEU
for German texts, old and new spelling rules.

To simplify the installation for you, I provide WinEdt macros:
 eng_dic.edt For the above setup, liberal British as default
 eng_US.edt For US as default
 eng_UK.edt For UK as default
Place the contents of english.zip into %B\dict\eng where %B is the directory
where winedt.exe is found. Then select Macros|Execute Macro... from the tool
bar, running one of the above .edt files.

WARNING: these macros will load the standard set of modes with :US and :UK
added as submodes. If you have any customize modes of your own, do not do
this. Rather, add the submodes by hand and then load the appropriate
eng_*.dat file under Options|Dictionaries Right mouse button Load from...

This dictionary and the collection of words that it contains can be

(modified is necessary to point the changes made in the

The french WinEdt dictionary has been split into two dictionaries that
differ by the use of oe and ae.

Some words like coeur should use the oe ligature ({\oe} as seen
by TeX) instead of the two characters o and e.

It is erroneous to write coeur instead of c{\oe}ur. This explains
why I decided to provide two versions of the dictionary.

Unfortunately, the use of the new version of the dictionary requires to
configure WinEdt. This is why I will continue to provide the erroneous
version. Despite this, I DO NOT RECOMMAND TO USE THE ERRONEOUS VERSION,
called fr_o_e.dic.

In order to help people to change the way they write c{\oe}ur, I have written
a document explaining how to code these characters very easily when using WinEdt.
This document is written in french. It is my intent to summarize it in english.

I would like to thanks Nicolas le Novre and Erik Frambach for their work on the
present version of the dictionary. I will try to maintain it in the same spirit as
they did.

Below is the file that was included with the previous version of fr.dic.

--------------------------

Current date : 12 june 1999

This dictionnary is a non-redundant fusion of the WinEdt 1.414 french
dictionary and the following corrections.

I-Auditioned words:

I-1
In general these words ARE NOT specialized ones. They were verified to be present in the
 ``Petit Larousse en Couleur''
 Edition of 1982
 ISBN 2-03-302381-8
Or in the
 ``Petit Robert''
 Edition of 1978
 ISBN 2-85-036007-4
and they are therefore assumed to be part of the ``plain'' french.

The one-letter words were added, even if the default setting of WinEdt begins
the spelling at two-letters words. Indeed if every non-accentuated letters
are chemical or physical symbols (i.e. equivalent to word), some accentuated
letters are not, and the correction has to be possible (e.g. , , etc.)

I-2 The following words are not in the dictionnariesdictionaries quoted
above but were added for sake of coherence.

arginine, arginines, aspartate, aspartates, aspartique, aspartiques, glutamine,
glutamines, proline, prolines : presence of the other amino-acids
extracellulaire : presence of "intracellulaire"

II- All words containing a apostrophe were removed. The prefixes were
added instead. There are two rationals. First the initial WinEdt french
dictionary contained numerous wrong words, probably arisen from automatic
fusion of characters (e.g. lorsqu' became lorsq\'u and so on). Second,
although present in standard dictionaries, such words result from a
modification of the correct which is already present in the dictionary.
The final outcome is a redundance, sometimes very important. For instance
the addition of entr' before a verb would need a new entry for all
conjugated forms.

III-
The code for \ae is 145 in ibm850 encoding but 230 in isolatin-1. Due to
the large utilization of the later and its inclusion inside unicode, the
ibm950 codes (default of windows95) were not used. \ae is wrongly written
as two separated letters a and e instead. The use of isolatin-1 encoding
is planned in the future releases (in particular, windows98 seems happy
with unicode).

Due to the absence of \oe and \OE in ISO8859-1, the words containing these
characters are wrongly described as two separated letters o and e. Their
inclusion will probably be longer than \ae (because unicode is far less
standard than isolatin-1).

New German Dictionaries

If you're interested read all of this file !!!!!!!!!

I'm not the maintainer of the German dictionaries, but I needed a
new German one. Thus, I did it myself, using all the info I found
on the internet.

If someone has German word-lists with words NOT IN DE_NEU.DIC or
DE_ALT.DIC I'm willing to check them and add them to a new version
of either DE_NEU.DIC or DE_NEU_Addon.DIC -- if it would not be too
time consuming as I have lots of other work to do, too.
Furthermore, I will not split the words and add them to special
dictionaries like ELEKTRONIK.DIC, it's too much effort with only
little use (IMHO).

 e-mail: christian cenker @ univie . ac . at
 home: http://staff.smc.univie.ac.at/cenker

I recompiled the latest german dictionaries to the 'Neue deutsche
Rechtschreibung' (new German spelling from 1998). Furthermore, I
renamed the German dictionaries using German names only, as IMHO
everybody who uses the German dictionaries should know the German
language. I think we all know what auto-translation programs not
aware of the language produce - at least something to laugh about.
Thus, I'm now switching to German.

Obwohl ich sonst eher anglophil bin - die Umgangs- und
Wissenschaftssprache der Mathematiker, finde ich, wie gesagt, dass
jemand, der die deutschen Wrterbcher verwendet zumindest so viel
Ahnung vom Deutschen haben soll, das er/sie das hier versteht.

 de_neu.dic neue deutsche Rechtschreibung
 de_alt.dic 'altes' Wrterbuch = de.dic

 alle anderen Dateien wurden ins Neu-Deutsch bersetzt
 und umbenannt, d.h., ich verpasste ihnen deutsche Bezeichnungen.

Was ich tat:

geschriebenen Form ins Wrterbuch aufgenommen, falls beide Teile
der Getrennt-Schreibung deutsche Worte sind, die bereits im
Wrterbuch sind.

Also, im Zweifelsfalle getrennt schreiben! Das ist fast immer
erlaubt bzw. sinnvoll (vgl. unten)!

Einige Beispiele neu-deutscher Sprache:
---------------------------------------

Natrlich gibt's keine berprfung auf grammatikalisch richtige
Verwendung, wie in:

 Getrnke kalt stellen
 jemanden kaltstellen

 den Oberkrper frei machen
 einen Brief freimachen

 trotz weit gehender Vollmachten
 seine Vollmachten waren weitgehender

 ein klein kariertes Heft
 eine kleinkarierte Person

 er ist eine hoch gestellt Persnlichkeit
 eine hochgestellte Ziffer im Text

 er hat das Rohr gerade gebogen
 er hat die Situation geradegebogen

 das Schiff klarmachen
 jemanden etwas klar machen

 fr etwas geradestehen
 aber: er soll gerade stehen, nicht schief

 Allein erziehende Mtter sind Alleinerziehende

 Erholung suchende Touristen sind Erholungsuchende

 Essen warm halten

This is the Readme file for "se.dic", a Swedish dictionary for
WinEdt.

This dictionary was compiled from public domain sources by Pelle
Ingvarsson (pelle@zoology.ubc.ca).
Specifically I have taken Gran Andersson's wordlist for ispell
(http://www.sslug.dk/ispell/) and merged it with a private
wordlist I have maintained myself for a while now.

According to Alex's suggestions for the hierarchy in the /dict
directory the file should be placed in:

$WINEDT-DIR$/dict/se/main

Any questions or comments? Contact me.

SI.DIC
 Slovenian Word List (v.1.0) for WinEdt
 Created: January 27, 1999
 Last Revision: February 19, 1999
 Code Page: cp1250

 Converted from
 http://nl.ijs.si/gnusl/tex/tslovene/src/mte-sl.words
 by applying the following string translation in WinEdt
 (Latin II -> cp1250):
 #185 -> #154
 #190 -> #158
 #174 -> #142
 #169 -> #138
 sorting the result with WinEdt's Dictionary Manager and
 saving it in UNIX (LF) format.

 Since WinEdt by default ignores one-letter words such
 words have been removed. Also a dot has been removed from
 a few abbreviations (such as prof., mag., itd...) because
 WinEdt's spell checking algorithm is not designed to match
 words containing non-alphabetical characters.
____________________________________________________________________

This version of Slovenian word dictionary was compiled by Aleksander
Simonic and Uros Lotric for use with WinEdt. The dictionary is
included in WinEdt's dictionary collection on CTAN with the kind
permission of GNUsl (http://nl.ijs.si/gnusl/).

The original file mte-sl.words was build by company Amebis
(http://www.amebis.si/) in cooperation with Institute Jozef Stefan
(http://www.ijs.si) under the European MULTEXT-East project. It was
derived from BesAna spell-checker dictionary and now it is freely
accessible at GNUsl web site
 http://nl.ijs.si/gnusl/tex/tslovene/src/mte-sl.words
under GNU Copyleft.

Slovenian word list for WinEdt, si.dic, is freely accessible for
non-commercial use. Besides, it should not be used as integral part
of any commercial product.
