[This file is ./TeX3.14/LAMS-TeX/NOTE
for users of the Unix TeX distribution.

 August 1991.

The original LAMS-TeX distribution was intended for DOS
and Macintosh machines. The LAMS-TeX documentation will
reflect this.

All essential files have been kept, and are organized as
follows:

--all LAMS-TeX input files (macros and documents)
 are in ./inputs

--all METAFONT sources for producing commutative
 diagrams are in ./mf

--*.tfm font files generated from these sources
 are in ./tfm

--the index program (turns LAMS-TeX index files
into sorted, extended files) has been ported
to Unix by Pierre MacKay. Gcc with or without
 optimization will compile it.

If you can get it to work with cc,
let us know, and we will add your
 fixes to the distribution.

 E-mail: mackay@cs.washington.edu
 elisabet@max.u.washington.edu
 Phone: (206) 543-6259

--the dvipaste program has been placed in
 DVIware/dvitools/dvipaste because of its
 general usefulness. LAMS-TeX users will
need it when producing tables. (DVIware
is parallel to the directory TeX3.14.)

To generate the LAMS-TeX Installation Manual--also known as
"Read Me First!":

1) Copy the contents of ./inputs to your TEXINPUTS directory
(or to any directory where TeX can find them), or use
 symbolic links.

2) Copy the contents of ./mf to your MFINPUTS directory
 (or use symbolic links).

3) If you followed the installation instructions in
./TeX3.14/README, you have made and installed METAFONT.

Use it to generate the *.pk font files for your previewer/printer
 driver programs.

The METAFONT man page is your guide to generating
fonts. We strongly recommend that TeX users
become familiar with at least this METAFONT document.

Sample command line for generating lams1.300gf for a 300dpi
 write-white device:

 % mf '\mode=RicohFourZeroEightZero; \mag=magstep0;' input lams1

The lams?.tfm files should be placed in your TEXFONTS
directory. The gf font files can be converted into pk format
via the mfware utility gftopk. Rastered fonts should be
placed wherever your driver program expects to find them.

4) Go to DVIware/dvitools/dvipaste; make, test, and install the
 dvipaste program.

5) Run the following commands in sequence:

 % tex insttbls
 % tex inst

 [ ignore warning messages ]

 % emacs inst.tex

 [ edit this file
 to remove the % sign
 in front of the line
 \maketoc ]

 % tex inst

[ no warning messages should appear ]

 % tex inst

 [ yes, a third time ]

 % dvipaste inst

Preview or print the resulting inst.dvi file to learn about the
details for the steps above. It is important that you do so.

6) TeX the samp.tex file to see another sample of LAMS-TeX at work,
as well as for details about obtaining the primary manual and
 other documentation for these macros.
