+is about to start publication of `Commentary'
+which will cover the area of `Desktop Publishing'.

+They have already published a `Precursor Issue',
+which made quite interesting reading. Especially
+relevant to \TeX\ was their definition of desktop publishing, namely:
+``any system which allows someone --- using a desktop
+terminal --- to produce a document of typeset or near-typeset quality\dots
+It can run on a microcomputer or a large mainframe.''
+
+Less agreeable are the enormous sums which it will
+take to receive this twice quarterly (I think that means 8 times a year)
+publication. First-year subscription is \quid350, although members of
+Pira are elegible for a discount of \quid70, making it a mere \quid280.
+I used to have this weird idea that electronic publication might
+make things cheaper. Silly me. It therefore comes as no real surprise
+that ``The contents of Pira Desktop Publishing Commentary may not be
+reproduced by any means without the prior permission of the publisher in
+writing''. I am relieved that I merely quote from the Precursor Issue,
+and not the real thing. It is rather interesting how the idea of
+emulating the Seybold Report mobilises money-spinning ideas.

+There is a bug in the current versions of \TeX.
+It is a little esoteric, but qualified its
+finder for a fairly handsome cheque from
+Donald Knuth. Its finder was Donald Knuth himself:
+ if you type a space after
+a hyphen or dash, you do not get optimum line breaks.
+If you look through the \TeX book, you will notice that
+Knuth seldom (if ever) puts spaces after dashes. Which
+may help to explain why it has taken so long to surface,
+or to be recognised. In TUGboat, Knuth says that he
+has sent details of the changes necessary to
+all the main implementors, and that he expects a
+new version to be available from those implementors
+in the future.

+There are several references in \TeX line to TUGboat.
+TUGboat contains the communications of the
+\TeX\ Users Group (TUG), and is published ``irregularly''
+(about three times a year). If you are seriously
+interested in \TeX, you really ought to join TUG,
+and therefore receive TUGboat.
+Since it covers the whole field of \TeX\ endeavour
+there is usually something for everyone. I personally
+feel that it could increase its coverage of simple
+or beginning \TeX, and afford to recap the current
+position, just for those who don't know. However, besides
+ detailed accounts
+of ``how I implemented \TeX\ on the Lemon FAU-32,
+despite overwhelming odds'', it includes topics of far
+more general
+interest. Naturally TUGboat covers \MF\ and {\tt WEB}.
+As more \TeX\ related products come along, the
+amount of advertising material has increased too.
+I find this very useful, although I do find certain
+US and Canadian advertisers a little reluctant to communicate with
+Europe.

+an IBM pc clone running micro\TeX\ with \LaTeX.
+The micro ``quite often gets locked and has to
+be rebooted''. This can happen with

+not available. After rebooting, the file seems to
+be accepted without demur. The problem
+has never been encountered with \TeX\ itself. Has anyone else encountered

+Although \TeX\ has a bewilderingly large array of
+special symbols and operators, inevitably there are
+omissions. One such is a `three dot' accent,
+analagous to |\dot| and |\ddot|. This is not
+particularly difficult to provide, through the use
+of |\mathchoice|. The main problem lies in finding
+the correct gap between the new accent and the group it
+accents, for each style. The use of |\mathcoice|
+is rather expensive for \TeX, since it assiduously
+calculates each of the four possibilities when it
+is referenced, not knowing which one it will use.

+Taken together, they allow you to write something

+centred, but this is consistent

+Of course, there must be better ways to do both of these,
+mustn't there? But a word of warning: I use the cmr fonts.
+If you use these definitions for the amr fonts, you will have
+to modify them slightly. I originally devloped them with
+\TeX tures, which uses cmr, and intended to include them in
+the last \TeX line, which was done with micro\TeX, using amr.
+ The |\ut| seemed fine, but the |\dddot| looked dreadful!
+The moral of this is that you cannot expect that definitions
+for one font will necessarily work in another (which you
+knew), and that amr and cmr should be treated as different fonts.
+
+I was asked if I could do an `operator that looked
+just like the |\diamondsuit| character with a plus sign
+in it, the plus filling the symbol', for a book on
+logic. At least that isn't too difficult:

+Among all the rather wonderful things in \TeX hax
+(well, they make me wonder), were a few macros for
+other extended symbols which may be useful
+to someone somewhere.

+and Complex numbers.'' Leslie Stockhausen and Gus Gassman

+One of Informat's main activities is the typesetting of academic
+journal's. This is accomplished at present by a suite of programs called
+\TS, which take unformatted text with embedded markup codes and
+pass it through a series of processes which result in fully justified,
+hyphenated and page-formatted output being sent to a Linotron 101 typesetter.
+
+Early this year I conceived the idea of retaining the simple user
+interface of \TS\ but creating an entire new version of the system
+which would use \TeX\ as its internal engine; and which would produce
+output in \dvi\ format rather than Cora, the language understood by the
+Linotron. By doing this we would gain speed, extensibility and
+flexibility.
+
+\TS's markup codes are mnemonics like {\tt\#TEXT\#}, {\tt\#TITLE\#},
+{\tt\#FOOTNOTE\#}, etc.\ These are both hard-coded but specified by a style sheet:
+there is a style sheet for every different type of document we set.
+In the present version of \TS\ a program called CONVERT, which is an
+exteremely fast and flexible table-driven string-replacement filter,
+changes the markup codes into strings of Cora commands that select
+the appropriate style on the Linotron. For example
+{\tt\#TEXT\#} might, in a certain type of document, be replaced by Cora commands which
+select Garamond Light at 11 points on 12-point leading and set the measure
+to 20 picas.
+
+The first task I attempted was to experiment with editing the substitution
+file (the table of string substitutions read by CONVERT) so that \TeX\
+rather than Cora would be produced. This proved gratifyingly easy:
+after about half a day of work I had created a substitution file that would
+allow CONVERT to turn an unmodified source document from one of our
+medical journals into output that \TeX\ could process without errors.
+
+I then realised the main task lay elsewhere. The creation of valid
+\TeX\ source code was, if not trivial, a predictable and well-explored
+problem. What we really needed was some way of driving the various output
+devices that \TS\ uses. These are the screen, for visual previewing,
+the laser printer, for a preview that is reasonably high-quality but
+faster and cheaper than real typesetting; and the Linotron typesetter
+itself.
+
+I wrote a library of functions in C which could open and read the instructions
+from a \dvi\ file. Since several \dvi\ drivers were needed it seemed
+sensible not to have different pieces of interpreter code in
+each program. This task would have been impossible without
+reference to {\sl\TeX\ the Program}, which contains a full decsription of
+the \dvi\ and \tfm\ (\TeX\ font metric) file formats. Nevertheless, I found
+some parts of the explanation difficult to grasp: Knuth's pithy style
+is a constant test of the reader's alertness.
+
+I have now written two drivers: DVISCR, which reads any \dvi\ file and
+displays its contents on a screen using the GSX graphics system, for which
+drivers are available for most MS-DOS machines; and DVICORA, which creates
+a file of text and Cora commands which can be sent to the Linotron 101
+by our existing program TCONTROL. DVISCR does not use the pixel files
+created by \MF: all it needs are \tfm\ files. The characters are displayed
+on the screen using a simple vector font, in which each caharacter
+consists of a list of strokes contained in a data file
+loaded when DVISCR is invoked.
+
+DVICORA would be useless without appropriate \tfm\ files. These are created
+by running a program called LINTFM, written by my colleague Mrs Nisha
+Patel. LINTFM uses conversion tables which describe the relationship
+between Knuth's standard extended-Ascii encoding and the way characters
+are accessed on the Linotron: this results in \tfm\ files which reflect the
+macros of {\tt plain.tex}. Only one \tfm\ file is created for each Linotron font,
+so the `at <size>' argument must be used when specifying fonts. There are three
+`special' Linotron \tfm\ files: {\tt mathital.tfm}, {\tt symbol.tfm} and
+{\tt mathex.tfm}. These describe the correspondence between \TeX\ mathematical
+characters and Linotron `pi' fonts, and allow most of the {\tt plain.tex}
+mathematical macros to work unchanged.
+
+To tell \TeX\ to sue the Linotron fonts rather than its own Almost or
+Computer Modern Roman fonts I had to create a modified version of {\tt plain.tex},
+changing all the preloaded fonts and the font specifications
+for math mode. I have set it up so that Roman text is set by
+default at Times Roman, and sans-serif as Helvetica; but anyone
+who uses our system can easily change this to suit his or her
+convenience.
+
+In progress at the time of writing is a PostScript driver called
+DVIPOST, also written by Mrs Nisha Patel. This will use any font
+available on the PostScript device or make a table-driven substitution
+for fonts that are not available.
+
+I an writing a \TeX\ version of another component of \TS: a
+system for simplified table creation. This program,
+TEXTABLE, takes input files in
+our existing friendly table format and converts them into the
+complete apparatus of alignment preambles, glue and tabs.
+
+In the long term (between six months and a year in the future)
+we hope to build a complete \TeX\ version of \TS, including
+its powerful style sheet specification facilities and
+automatic page make-up optimised over the entire document.
+
+The parts of the system which exist so far work very well (and
+are already being used at one beta-test site). That is,
+you can use our {\tt tsplain.tex} format, \tfm\ files and screen driver
+to create valid \TeX\ source
+code, then process this using \TeX\ in the normal way. The \dvi\
+file can then be used to drive the Linotron 101 typesetter to produce
+camera-ready pages at up to 1400 dots per inch.
+
+We propose to charge \quid2.00 per 300 points of leading for high-resolution
+(1400 dpi) setting of \dvi\ files on the Linotron; or \quid1.50 per 300pt
+leading for low-resolution (350 dpi). Laser printing will be charged
+at \quid2.00 per A4 page. These prices do not include VAT, postal charges
+or delivery. The minimum charge is \quid20.00. Normal turnaround is three
+days: prices are doubles for same-day turnaround.

+system which they say ``can be used for coding
+input on any word processor or computer and may
+be interfaced to virtually any front-end system
+to drive a phototypesetter.'' The markup language
+includes codes for font changes, type size changes, justified
+text, and other typographic effects, including complex
+tabular work and access to special characters (like
+Greek, phonetic, etc.). It is also said to be simple

+McQueen now handle not only Mac\TeX, but also
+the Page One Book Publishing system. This is a fully
+automated book publishing system which is based on {\sl FTL systems}'
+Mac\TeX, using templates to access a variety of formats and book designs,
+eliminating the need for users to design their own layouts.
+One of the ways this software exploits the hardware
+and software available is by letting output be
+printed at magnifications up to 180\%, allowing
+standard laser printers to produce a notional
+540 dpi after photoreduction.
+
+The manuscript is entered using Microsoft Word on a Mac, and then
+it can be processed through Page One (and \TeX) to produce printed
+copy on any \PS\ compatible printer.
+
+The prices quoted are \$2000US, although for Mac\TeX\ owners
+this is reduced to \$1500US. I would anticipate these prices
+to be translated almost directly into sterling, despite the
+abyssmal showing of the dollar at present.
+
+From this description, gleaned from the McQueen press release, Apple 2000
+and TUGboat, it is not clear whether Word's limitations similarly
+limit Page One --- for example, have things like diacriticals
+and mathematics been abandoned? Since Page One was developed by
+Toronto-based McCutcheon Graphics, it is likely that diacriticals

+As noted in the last \TeX line, \TeX hax has
+returned. First, what is \TeX hax? It is
+one of the many electronic distribution
+systems which are around. In this you receive
+a copy of the centrally submitted material, both
+queries and responses. The basic idea is that for any
+query, someone somewhere will at least have encountered
+a similar problem, and may be able to help (or to
+confirm that the problem is difficult).
+
+\TeX hax has a `moderator', who tries to `edit'
+the material which comes in, perhaps filtering
+out the more trivial or libellous material (takes
+all the fun away). The moderator is Malcolm Brown
+of Stanford University. \TeX hax has a distribution
+list. The digest of mail is sent to each person
+on the distribution list. To be placed on the
+distribution list, you will need to contact

+or perhaps |texhax-request@SU-score.ARPA|
+through one of the networks. There are at least two
+minor problems involved in this: the first is accessing
+ARPAnet. The second
+problem is the vast amount of email byte-ing its
+way across the Atlantic (or even the Pacific ---
+it sometimes seems easier to access the US via Australia).
+A way out of this problem is to establish a distribution
+list within the local area. A small number of
+sites then receive \TeX hax, and dutifully re-transmit
+it to their own distribution list. This makes active
+participation in \TeX hax limited, but at least
+makes the material failrly accessible.
+
+All the UK
+academic sites are connected through JANET, which
+makes this re-transmission very easy. The Irish
+universities are on another system, and European
+sites appear to be connected mainly by Bitnet.
+I would like to collect the electronic mailing addresses
+of those receiving \TeX line anyway, and such a list
+could provide the backbone for a local distribution
+list.

+This does not solve the problem for non-academic
+people, but there must be some way of accommodating
+them too. Any suggestions?

+copy of \TeX line down, but another one arrives
+through the mails. Clearly some explanation is
+in order. The explanation lies in the extra piece
+of paper which is even now fluttering to the ground
+at your feet: \TeX\ courses in Europe --- yes, at
+last we are on the TUG map! A true Scot, I could
+hardly send out that sheet all by itself, when a
+little effort would let it be accompanied by a
+short newsletter.

+Besides,
+it gave me an opportunity to produce \TeX line
+with \TeX tures on my Macintosh. If I prattle
+on about the Mac, you must realise that only a little
+over a year ago I was wrestling with an obsolete
+\TeX\ implementation on a CDC mainframe; then the
+pc versions of \TeX\ came along and my life was
+turned upside down --- reliable \TeX! And now,
+fully integrated, easy to use (sic) \TeX.
+This entire \TeX line was produced in \TeX tures,
+except for the diagrams on the last page. One
+of them was produced on a Mac XL, and the other is
+\DW's chemical diagram from \TeX line 4. Since this
+uses \LaTeX, a feature not yet available with
+\TeX tures, I had to use a matrix printed version.
+
+Some people will be receiving \TeX line who have
+never seem it before, since I have augmented my
+usual mailing list to include some additions from
+TUG. If it is a stranger to you, and you want to
+see it again, do get in contact.

+One feature of this edition, which I do not particularly
+like is the frequency with which my name crops up
+at the bottom of a piece: in other words, I would prefer

+``Do you wish to succeed with \MF\ or even just get
+it to work?'' ran the message from Charles Curran
+in \TeX hax. I was intrigued, and joined him, and a
+small band of other would-be \MF-ers at Oxford University
+on March 20th. Part of the appeal of this meeting was
+the presence of Richard Southall, well-known in
+the \TeX\ world for his work with \MF. The bulk
+of the morning was given over to a talk by Richard on
+his approach to font design using \MF. Richard had
+used mainly the `old' \MF\ (described in {\sl`\TeX\ and} \MF),
+rather than the more recent \MF\
+({\sl`The \MF\ book}).
+Nevertheless he was clearly far more competent in the use
+of either than the combined might of the others present.
+
+Richard described the old \MF\ as using a pen metaphor, while
+the new one adopts an outline fill approach. Nevertheless,
+his comments as a someone trying to design `technically
+satisfactory typefaces' were applicable to both. He noted that
+there were few, if any, good books on the aesthetics of type, and
+that type design is essentially a craft which utilises
+unarticulated rules (in other words, its not easy, and it's difficult
+to say why some designs are good and some aren't). There has been
+a tradition of type design since the 1500's, and certain internal standards
+have evolved which have formed opinion of what type ought to
+look like: insofar as objectively defined criteria
+of goodness of design could be established, Richard suggested the
+following: letters should look the same weight, size and alignment, and should
+appear evenly spaced. Even these apparently straightforward criteria
+are hard to achieve over a single type face, let alone a family.
+
+\MF\ was viewed by Richard as a draughting, rather than an original design tool,
+and when he used it he tended also to use alternative approaches.
+He began at the large scale, and then honed down the details.
+
+One very relevant point was the impossibility to achieve
+device independence --- most acutely at low resolutions. The
+different `write white'/`write black' characteristics of the
+Xerox and Canon laser printers mean that the \MF\ description
+should take these factors into account. Similarly, Richard
+queried the {\sl meta} nature of \MF, citing an example where
+a description worked successfully over several ranges and styles,
+but unexpectedly developed a wierd protuberance at one particular
+set of parameters (within the previous parameter extremes). There
+was no {\it a priori} way of demonstrating that this would occur.
+In other words there appears to be no correctness or consistency
+proof for a \MF\ description.
+
+What \MF\ can do well (despite this last counter-example), is
+to allow gradation of sizes, and to digitise an outline. What it
+does not do (and he included Ikarus here too), was to allow
+a designer to work directly on the appearance of the product.
+
+It must be stressed that Richard has worked particularly on
+low resolution fonts, especially those for vdu-type screens, and
+subtitling for films. He felt that by the time you get to
+1200 dpi, then shape and appearance become synonymous.
+
+Given Knuth's oft-repeated recommendation that
+\TeX\ people talk to designers, it was clearly of the
+utmost importance to have this sort of discussion
+led by someone of Richard's knowledge and experience,
+especially someone who was aware of the deficiencies
+of \MF, as well as its good points. There are many pitfalls present
+in font design, and it would be wise to avoid them as far
+as possible. The simple solution appears to be to become
+apprenticed to a recognised type designer for a decade or so,
+and then use \MF\ (or some other automated system). Otherwise
+you will be in trouble.
+
+That's not to say that \MF\ is not useful to the
+lay user here and now. It is useful in order to produce
+pixel files from existing descriptions, perhaps
+at other resolutions, or for other point sizes. It will also
+be useful to generate the other characters which
+are currently unavailable. If you are willing to
+sacrifice the {\sl meta} nature of \MF, the problems are
+less acute. Sadly, we cannot afford to wait until
+a competent designer picks up the financially rather unprofitable
+exotic fonts like Sanskrit, hieroglyphic,
+even IPA, to name a few (although I'm not sure whether
+you could ever know whether a font like, say, Runic,
+was well designed). These are fonts which are most likely to
+be developed by enthusiastic amateurs.
+
+In the afternoon we managed an almost hands on
+session with pc\MF, thanks to \DW\
+and the pc hardware might of Oxford University.
+This reasured everyone that it was possible to
+create characters (Dominik is working on a Sanskrit
+font),
+and gave us some feeling for the response time of the
+process. A font will not be designed in a day.
+
+Further \MF\ meetings like this one will be held,

+I can distribute two sets of macros on disk at present;
+on 5{\frac1/4} inch disks for MS-DOS, and 3{\frac1/2} inch
+diskettes for the Macintosh. The macros available
+are: |manmac.tex| which are those listed on pages
+413--425 of {\sl The \TeX book}, and include some double
+columning and verbatim facilities: and |table.tex|,
+together with its documentation file |tabman.tex|,
+which are Ray Cowan's table macros.
+
+It also includes a file of hyphenation exceptions, |hyphen.tex|, as
+published from time to time in TUGboat. This particular
+file will be updated as new exceptions to \TeX's algorithm
+come to light.
+
+A disk containing these macros can be obtained from me
+for the price of the medium, post \&\ packing,
+and a small copying charge. For the 5{\frac1/4}
+disks the charge is \quid2.00, and for the smaller
+diskettes \quid2.50. Note that no
+charge is made for the macros themselves.

+that nobody bothers to mention the fact that it was
+\TeX ed. I do think it is a pity that \TeX\ is
+not acknowledged as the workhorse, but I suppose
+the fact that it is taken for granted is encouraging.
+It can be useful to show people who are interested in
+using \TeX\ the sorts of output that are available.
+If you can show them material that others have done,
+they may be able to gain a broader view of its
+capabilities.
+

+is about to start publication of `Commentary'
+which will cover the area of `Desktop Publishing'.

+They have already published a `Precursor Issue',
+which made quite interesting reading. Especially
+relevant to \TeX\ was their definition of desktop publishing, namely:

+terminal --- to produce a document of typeset or near-typeset quality\dots
+It can run on a microcomputer or a large mainframe.''

+Less agreeable is the enormous sums which it will
+take to receive this twice quarterly (I think that means 8 times a year)

+Pira are elegible for a discount of {\it\$}70, making it a mere {\it\$}280.
+I used to have this weird idea that electronic publication might
+make things cheaper. Silly me. It therefore comes as no real surprise

+\noindent PostScript (a trademark of Adobe Systems Inc.)
+is a programming language intended for a wide
+variety of printing devices, but its capabilities are best
+supported on laser-printers or phototypesetters. It was created by Adobe
+Systems Inc.\ as a page description language, to be directly interpreted
+by intelligent printers. In most cases, \PS\ programs will be generated
+automatically by higher level document-processing systems: a first glance at a \PS\ program
+will confirm this view. However, the reward for learning the language
+is a facility to create eye-catching graphical effects
+with comparatively simple programs.

+\centerline{\it Tutorial and Cookbook}
+\noindent This book is an excellent introduction to the philosophy and programming of
+\PS. It is easy to read and presents the language in an interesting
+way. The tutorial begins by introducing \PS\ as both a page description
+and a full programming language. To understand \PS\ programs, it is
+necessary to be familiar with ``stacks'' and the basic elements of
+structured programming. Fortunately the book dedicates two chapters to these
+fundamentals, explaining them well with the aid of some simple examples.
+More advanced facilities in graphics and character-printing are introduced
+gradually with many clear illustrations of the
+output from simple programs. Examples are frequently re-used to illustrate
+more advanced techniques, making it easier to see the relative advantages
+from using them. Quite impressive graphics are shown as the results of elementary programs,
+emphasising the new possibilities offered by \PS.
+
+Following the tutorial, the cookbook is a spectacular gallery of \PS\
+plates. It shows the large range of effects that can be created from programs
+written by a more skilled programmer. Each plate is presented
+with the text of the program and explanations on the facing page.
+This section should act as an inspiration for programmers-to-be and
+a source of ideas for people who have learned the language.

+\noindent This gives a more detailed account of the ideas behind
+\PS, but requires more concentration than the tutorial. It does not
+attempt to give techniques for the effective programming of \PS.

+The second half of the book is a dictionary of \PS\ commands,
+with formal definitions of the syntax and precise function of each command. One
+of the more interesting commands listed is called {\tt image}. We tried
+this command with part of a monochrome television picture, downloaded from
+our department's VAX. This was successfully reproduced though having the appearance of a photocopied
+picture.

+The \PS\ snowball seems to be gathering momentum,
+as IBM has now chosen \PS\ as its preferred
+``desktop publishing'' standard. Adobe calculates
+that there are no less than 23 laser printers supporting the
+language. I still harbour a sneeky suspicion that
+a ``page description language'' is not really
+addressing the problem of documents, which, after all, have
+a structure over and above that of page level. The
+DDL (Document Description Language) of Imagen and Hewlett-Packard
+seems conceptually more apposite, but at least we are advancing
+in the right direction.
+
+In a letter to TUGboat, Leslie Lamport makes some
+interesting observations on the relationship between
+\PS\ and {\tt dvi}. Fundamentally Lamport feels that
+the rest of the world is going to adopt \PS\ as
+the device-independent output format, and that
+\TeX\ would have wider applicability if it too
+generated \PS. Part of the immediate problem in doing this
+lies in fonts. {\sl FTL systems inc} have already
+converted the CMR fonts to \PS\ form, rather than pixel,
+so the problems may not be insuperable. He also notes
+the desirability of \MF\ producing \PS\ fonts,
+complete with {\tt .tfm} files.
+
+I'm a little less sanguine than Lamport about the
+inevitability of \PS. I suspect we will shortly see
+a generation of laser-printers which have a switch with
+three positions: \PS, InterPress and DDL, depending on the
+application required. If we are lucky, this will be
+software selectable. Of course, one of the major reasons
+that Xerox, Imagen etc.\ will not accept \PS\ lies in
+Adobe's patenting of the character encoding form they
+use. Other manufacturers therefore have to create their own
+incompatible system in order to compete. If only
+Gutenburg had managed to patent the printing press,
+we could still be in the Dark Ages. I jest not.
