\title{Sunny Mexico}
A report on my \TeX\ activities in Mexico and maybe a few personal too.
(The temperature is in the 70's --
the air is very polluted --
People are very charming and hospitable, and there are about 20
million just in Mexico City.
No one has heard of \SGML\ or CALS\dots).

Arturo Sanchez invited me to speak at the \TeX\
meeting in Mexico City in February 1991. A diligent host
he organised my sightseeing, including visiting the Pyramids
of the Sun and the Moon, built in the 6th and 7th Century.
Real old.

Did you know that {\sc the car} of Mexico is the VW Bug? There are $1+$
million manufactured there yearly, and nearly all the taxis are
Bugs\dots

Friday was the \TeX\ user meeting held at the University, near the
Olympic Stadium from 1968\dots

About 60 people attended and the program was all in Spanish with the
exception of my presentation. There were 4 speakers and one of the
people before me spoke on some of the same things that I had planned, so
it took some quick adjusting on my part.

Anyway, this was a friendly crowd and very receptive. They are using
PC \TeX\ 2.1, and have never heard of HiJaak, didn't know much about
\TeX\ 3.0/virtual fonts, so it was quite interesting for them to hear
about all our (ArborText) offerings. There is an Addison Wesley office there
and 3 people were present. They ordered an upgrade on the spot (they brought
their old version). Of all those present, all had PC's except 2 who had
Suns. There is much interest in a `Windows' version. In
case you are wondering, they all understood English so I
did not have to have a translator.

After a coffee break, they had a roundtable discussion in Spanish about
various projects, problems, etc., to which I listened and understood about
1/4. I went to dinner with the conference committee at the University
Club. A newly developing market, a little behind ours.

I have only seen one little tabloid English
language newspaper and no TV or radio in English except a
movie channel, so I truly feel that I have been {\sc away}.
