+title: Charis SIL - About
+fontversion: 6.001
+---
+
+## About this project
+
+This project is intended to provide a free and open font family for all current languages and writing systems that use Latin and Cyrillic scripts. It supports almost the complete range of Unicode characters for these scripts, including a comprehensive range of diacritics and a large set of symbols useful for linguistics and literacy work. Smart font routines automatically adjust the position of diacritics to support and optimize arbitrary base+diacritic combinations.
+
+For more information on the visual characteristics of the font family see [Design](design.md).
+
+For a comparison between this and other SIL fonts, see [Comparison of Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic fonts](https://software.sil.org/lcgfonts/support/comparison/).
+
+## Future plans
+
+These fonts are actively maintained and improved, and recent changes to their development process will enable more frequent releases.
+
+The highest priorities for future additions and enhancements are mainly driven by:
+
+- New additions to [The Unicode Standard](https://unicode.org/)
+- Requests from language communities using the fonts
+- Needs of the linguistic and academic community
+
+Although some expert typographic features are supported (e.g. small caps), those are a lesser priority.
+
+Please send us your requests using the [form on the font website](https://software.sil.org/charis/about/contact/). If you are interested in helping us make the fonts better see the [Developer](developer.md) page.
+
+## Announcement list
+
+If you wish to receive announcements about updates to any of our SIL fonts, please subscribe to our [SIL Font News Announcement List](https://groups.google.com/a/groups.sil.org/forum/#!forum/sil-font-news). This is an announcement-only list with messages approximately once a month. It does not allow any discussion.
+
+You can subscribe using either of the two following options.
+
+- If you use a Google profile and join the group, you will be able to access the group and control your subscription and notification options with a web browser. Make sure you are logged in to your Google profile and go to the [SIL Font News Google Group](https://groups.google.com/a/groups.sil.org/forum/#!forum/sil-font-news). Click on **Join group**.
+
+- If you would rather not use a Google profile, you can subscribe any email address by sending a message to [sil-font-news+subscribe@groups.sil.org](mailto:sil-font-news+subscribe@groups.sil.org) and following the instructions you get in the confirmation message.
+
+Our font announcements are also available through Twitter [@silfonts](http://twitter.com/silfonts).
+
+## Supporting the project
+
+These fonts are provided at no cost, however they are expensive to produce and maintain. Please consider donating to SIL’s font development efforts to support future development. Go to [SIL’s Give Direct page](https://donate.givedirect.org/?cid=13536&n=206909) and designate your gift for _Scripts & Fonts_. **Thank you!**
+

+Release 6.000
+
+We’re excited to announce the long-awaited version 6 release of Charis SIL. This release is full of new features and important improvements. **Note that this is a major upgrade. This may cause document reflow as some glyphs widths have changed and some features have been removed. Please do not assume that you can replace version 5 with version 6 with no resulting changes to your publications.**
+
+Both desktop and web fonts are provided in a single, all-platforms package on the [Download page](http://software.sil.org/charis/download).
+
+#### Removed
+
+- **Removed DSIGs added in version 5.000.** These have now been removed to reflect current best practice font development guidance. Adobe InDesign will complain that fonts cannot be found if a document last saved with version 5.000 is opened with version 5.960 or later installed. It will be necessary to find/replace the fonts in the document using the command in the Type menu. Please also look over the document carefully to note any places where changes in the fonts have affected letterforms or spacing.
+
+- **Graphite has been removed.** Application and OS support for OpenType has greatly improved, so the need for Graphite in this font family is greatly reduced. *If this affects you, and you find that OpenType does not provide sufficient support for your needs, please contact us right away.*
+
+- Removed the *Show Invisibles* feature.
+
+- Removed support for nine-level pitch contours. These will be replaced by a standalone pitch contours font in the future.
+
+#### Added
+
+Characters added to support Unicode versions 7.0-13.0, including feature support (e.g. small caps) where appropriate:

+#### Known issues
+
+- There is no support for TypeTuner or TypeTuner Web. We hope to add that support soon.
+
+- There are no regional subsets. Please contact us if these are a priority for you and describe how you use them. We are reassessing whether to provide these subsets. With current web technology and WOFF2 compression most uses can be met equally well with the full fonts.

+The fonts are built using a completely free and open source workflow using industry-standard tools ([fontools](https://github.com/fonttools/fonttools)), a package of custom python scripts ([pysilfont](https://github.com/silnrsi/pysilfont)), and a build and packaging system ([Smith](https://github.com/silnrsi/smith)). The whole system is available in a preconfigured virtual machine using VirtualBox and Vagrant.
+
+Full instructions for setting up the tools and building SIL fonts are available on a dedicated web site: [SIL Font Development Notes](https://silnrsi.github.io/silfontdev/).
+
+## Contributing to the project
+
+We warmly welcome contributions to the fonts, such as new glyphs, enhanced smart font code, or bug fixes. The [brief overview of contributing changes](https://silnrsi.github.io/silfontdev/en-US/Contributing_Changes.html) is a good place to begin. The next step is to contact us by responding to an existing issue or creating an issue in the Github repository and expressing your interest. We can then work together to plan and integrate your contributions.
+
+Here are a few examples of contributions that would be welcomed (some more than others):
+
+- Old style figures
+- Coptic (Gentium)
+- Historic/Archaic Cyrillic
+- Mathematical glyphs
+- OpenType code and glyphs for on-the-fly fraction creation
+- Additional scripts (Armenian, etc.), and any needed OpenType code
+
+Because we want to be able to guarantee a high level of quality for our fonts, we will review submissions carefully. Contributions will need to cover all the weights and styles of the family and in some cases all four font projects. Please don’t be discouraged if we do not include a submission due to quality or incompleteness, or if we ask you to make specific revisions.
+
+To enable us to accept contributions in a way that honors your contribution and respects your copyright while preserving long-term flexibility for open source licensing, you would also need to agree to the **SIL International Contributor License Agreement for Font Software (v1.0)** prior to sending us your contribution. To read more about this requirement and find out how to submit the required form, please visit the [CLA information page](https://software.sil.org/fontcla).

+title: Charis SIL - Frequently Asked Questions
+fontversion: 6.001
+---
+
+Many questions can be answered by consulting the following FAQ pages. Here are a few sample questions answered in each FAQ:
+
+- [SIL fonts in general](http://software.sil.org/fonts/faq)
+ - *How can I type...?*
+ - *How can I use font features?*
+ - *Will you add support for character...?*
+ - *Will you add support for script...?*
+ - *WIll you help me...?*
+
+- [SIL’s Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek fonts](http://software.sil.org/lcgfonts/faq).
+ - *How can I type IPA symbols?*
+ - *How do I use both a single-story and double-story 'a' in italic?*
+ - *Why don’t my diacritics position properly?*
+ - *Why is the line spacing so much looser that other fonts?*
+
+- [The SIL Open Font License (OFL-FAQ)](https://scripts.sil.org/OFL-FAQ_web)
+ - *Can I use this font for...?*
+ - *Can I modify the font and then include it in...*
+ - *If I use the font on a web page do I have to include an acknowledgement?*
+ - The full OFL-FAQ.txt is also included in the font package.
+
+Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions specifically regarding Charis SIL:
+
+#### *Why does the font have some Greek characters, but not all?*
+
+Although Charis SIL includes some Greek characters, it is not intended to provide general support for the Greek language. The Greek characters that are included are there to support various notational systems (linguistic, logical, mathematical). Other fonts, such as [Gentium Plus](http://software.sil.org/gentium) provide complete Greek script support.
+
+#### *Will you add full Greek script support?*
+
+We have no plans to do that, however the [OFL licensing](https://scripts.sil.org/OFL_web) allows anyone to add Greek support and freely distribute the font to others. It is even possible to [contribute that work back to the project](developer.md) and share it with others.
+
+#### *Isn’t Charis SIL just a copy of Charter?*
+
+Charis SIL is very closely based on the design of Bitstream Charter, however the glyphs were completely redrawn based only on visual reference to Charter. There are some significant design differences in the serif structure, proportions, diacritics, and Cyrillic. The design was also adjusted and extended to cover a much wider range of characters and publishing needs.

+title: Charis SIL - Font Features
+fontversion: 6.001
+---
+
+Charis SIL is an OpenType-enabled font family that supports the Latin and Cyrillic scripts. It includes a number of optional features that may be useful or required for particular uses or languages. This document lists all the available features.
+
+These OpenType features are primarily specified using four-letter tags (e.g. 'cv17'), although some applications may provide a direct way to control certain common features such as small caps. For more information on how to access OpenType features in specific environments and applications, see [Using Font Features](http://software.sil.org/fonts/features).
+
+*Please note that Graphite support has been removed in the current release, but continues to be available in the version 5 fonts. See our [Previous Versions archive](http://software.sil.org/charis/download/previous-versions).*
+
+This page uses web fonts (WOFF2) to demonstrate font features and should display correctly in all modern browsers. For a more concise example of how to use Charis SIL as a web font see [Charis SIL Webfont Example](../web/CharisSIL-webfont-example.html). For detailed information see [Using SIL Fonts on Web Pages](http://software.sil.org/fonts/webfonts).
+
+*If this document is not displaying correctly a PDF version is also provided in the documentation/pdf folder of the release package.*

-Charis SIL
-==========
-
-This file provides detailed information on the Charis SIL family of fonts.
-This information should be distributed along with the Charis SIL fonts and
-any derivative works.
-
-## About this project
-
-This project is intended to provide a free and open font family for all
-current languages and writing systems that use Latin and Cyrillic scripts.
-It supports almost the complete range of Unicode characters for these scripts,
-including a comprehensive range of diacritics and a large set of symbols
-useful for linguistics and literacy work. Smart font routines automatically
-adjust the position of diacritics to support and optimize arbitrary
-base+diacritic combinations.
-
-Charis SIL is optimized for readability in long printed documents. It is
-highly readable and holds up well in less-than-ideal reproduction environments
-due to its simple and robust design with strong serifs and clear features.
-
-## Note regarding Charter
-
-This Charis SIL font is essentially the same design as the SIL Charis font
-first released by SIL in 1997. The design of the basic character set of Charis
-IL is similar (but not identical) to Bitstream Charter, designed by Matthew
-Carter. The following notice accompanied the Charter fonts:
-
-> © Copyright 1989-1992, Bitstream Inc., Cambridge, MA.
->
-> You are hereby granted permission under all Bitstream propriety rights to
-> use, copy, modify, sublicense, sell, and redistribute the 4 Bitstream
-> Charter® Type 1 outline fonts and the 4 Courier Type 1 outline fonts for
-> any purpose and without restriction; provided, that this notice is left
-> intact on all copies of such fonts and that Bitstream's trademark is
-> acknowledged as shown below on all unmodified copies of the 4 Charter Type
-> 1 fonts.
->
-> BITSTREAM CHARTER is a registered trademark of Bitstream Inc.
-
-SIL International is the creator of the Charis SIL fonts, and is the owner
-of all proprietary rights therein.
-
-## A Note Regarding the Open Font License and TypeTuner
-
-The OFL prohibits the use of Reserved Font Names "Charis" and "SIL" in
-the name of any font that is derived from the Original Version of Charis
-SIL. However, SIL International (the Copyright Holder) grants through
-this separate written agreement the right to use the Reserved Font Names
-in any Modified Version of this font created by using TypeTuner as long
-as the feature information contained in the Original Version is used,
-unmodified, as the source for TypeTuner feature information, and
-"Charis SIL" is not the resulting font family name.
-
-TypeTuner-produced fonts created in this manner are still bound by the
-terms of the OFL. Specifically, the use of Reserved Font Names is
-prohibited when making derivatives of a TypeTuner-produced font. Anyone
-making a derivative of a TypeTuner font will need to find a different
-name. For example a TypeTuner-produced font may be named
-"Charis SIL Literacy SomeFarAwayPlace" but a derivative of that font made
-with other tools would not be allowed to use the "Charis" and "SIL"
-Reserved Font Names and would have to be named something like "Grace Foo".

+title: Charis SIL - Resources
+fontversion: 6.001
+---
+
+## Requirements
+
+These fonts are supported by all major operating systems (macOS, Windows, Linux-based, iOS, and Android), however the extent of that support depends on the individual OS and application.
+
+## Installation
+
+Install the fonts by decompressing the .zip archive and installing the fonts using the standard font installation process for .ttf (TrueType/OpenType) fonts for your platform. For additional tips see the help page on [Font installation](https://software.sil.org/fonts/installation).
+
+## Keyboarding and character set support
+
+These fonts do not include keyboards or other software for entering text. To type the symbols in these fonts use the keyboarding systems provided in your OS or use a separate utility. SIL’s [Keyman](https://keyman.com/) provides keyboards for over 2000 languages and works on all major desktop and mobile platforms. For information on other keyboarding options see the overview at [Keyboard Systems Overview (ScriptSource)](https://scriptsource.org/entry/ytr8g8n6sw).
+
+See [Character set support](charset.md) for details of the Unicode characters supported by these fonts.
+
+## Rendering and application support
+
+These fonts will work normally like any other fonts in most applications. If the writing system requires special diacritic positioning the application/OS will need to support OpenType.
+
+These fonts also include extensive OpenType features for small caps, literacy forms, character alernates and language-specific preferences. For information on the specific features available in these fonts see [Font features](features.md).
+
+If special font features are to be activated the application will need to provide a way to turn on the feature or choose the feature setting. Details of current application support, and specific techniques for activating features, are on the [Using Font Features](http://software.sil.org/fonts/features) help page.
+
+Although the current fonts support only OpenType, previous versions provided support for Graphite and AAT (Apple Advanced Typography) technologies. Graphite was supported through version 5 and AAT was supported up to version 4. These older versions remain available from our [Previous Versions archive](http://software.sil.org/charis/download/previous-versions).
+
+## Web fonts
+
+Web font versions of these fonts (in WOFF and WOFF2 formats) are available in the `web` folder. These can be copied to a web server and used as fonts on web pages. A very basic HTML/CSS demo page is also included. For more information on the options and techniques available for using these fonts on web pages see [Using SIL Fonts on Web Pages](http://software.sil.org/fonts/webfonts).
+
+## Text conversion
+
+These fonts are encoded according to [The Unicode Standard](http://unicode.org). If you have text that uses a legacy, non-Unicode encoding there are tools that can help you convert that text for use with Unicode fonts. See [Introduction to Text Conversion and Transliteration](https://scriptsource.org/entry/xlzd6n5aqt).

+
+Our font announcements are also available through Twitter [@silfonts](http://twitter.com/silfonts).
+
+## Current versions
+
+The latest version of the fonts is always available from the [Charis SIL download page](https://software.sil.org/charis/download/) as a .zip archive for all major platforms.
+
+This font package is also available in the [SIL software repository for Ubuntu](https://packages.sil.org/). Users can subscribe to this software repository and get current versions and updates automatically.
+
+Charis SIL is also available through the [TypeTuner Web](https://scripts.sil.org/ttw/fonts2go.cgi) service, which allows you to choose among the smart font features and download a font with those features preset. This enables them to work in many applications that do not make use of Graphite or OpenType Stylistic Sets. *TypeTuner Web currently uses version 5 fonts, however we will be working to update it to use the newest version 6 fonts soon.*
+
+## Version 5 subsets and modified variants
+
+Special versions of Charis SIL version 5 were created for specific uses. Those fonts still work and remain available:
+
+- [Font subsets](https://software.sil.org/lcgfonts/font-subsets/) are limited versions of the fonts that support only the characters needed for a particular area or use. Subsets are available for Africa, Americas, Asia/Pacific, Europe/Eurasia, Vietnam, Phonetic, Cyrillic (Basic) and Cyrillic Extended. With the exception of the Phonetic font, the font subsets are intended for orthographic use only. We have not put anything in the other subsets for phonetic, transliteration, or transcription use. For those purposes, use the Phonetic subset.
+
+- [Modified fonts](https://software.sil.org/lcgfonts/download/) are fonts that have been ‘tuned’ to turn on certain features by default. These are available for some regions and for literacy uses.
+
+We do not intend to update these fonts to version 6, however they should continue to work. **If you have a need for any of these fonts to be updated to version 6 please [contact us](https://software.sil.org/charis/about/contact/).**
+
+## Previous versions
+
+Previous versions remain available from our [Previous Versions archive](https://software.sil.org/charis/download/previous-versions).
+
+## Change history
+
+A detailed list of changes for each version of the fonts is on the [Version history page](history.md).
