 Unslanted Digits in Adobe Utopia Italics
 Version 1.2
 Boris Veytsman

The Annals of Mathematics uses italics for theorems. However, slanted
digits and parentheses look disturbing when surrounded by (upright)
math. This package provides virtual fonts with italics and upright
digits and punctuation.

Changes:
 Version 1.1 - Changed the location of TFM and VF files
 per request by Karl Berry

 Version 1.2 - Corrected the bug that lead to wrong size in
 italics (thanks to AoM staff for noticing!)

%\section{Introduction}
%\label{sec:intro}
%
% This package provides fonts for the \emph{Annals of Mathematics.}
% The journal uses italics for theorems, but the house style requires
% upright digits and punctuation. Since the journal switched to Adobe
% Utopia fonts, it needed matching fonts for theorems typesetting.
%
%
% To install the package you need the file
% \url{http://mirrors.ctan.org/install/fonts/mdputu.tds.zip}/ Unzip
% this file in \path{$TEXMF}. Run |texhash| to update the
% configuration files and file names database.
%
%
%
% To use the package, you need to call it after
% |\usepackage[utopia]{mathdesign}|:
% \begin{verbatim}
% \usepackage[utopia]{mathdesign}
% \usepackage{mdputu}
% \end{verbatim}
%\DescribeMacro{\sitshape}
%\DescribeMacro{\textsit}
%\DescribeMacro{\specialdigits}
% This will define new font shape `special italics', which can be
% switched on by the declaration |\sitshape| or command |\textsit|,
% for example
% \begin{verbatim}
% {\sitshape This is example~1,} and this is \textsit{example~2.}
% \end{verbatim}
% The command |\specialdigits| changes italics to special italics:
% \begin{verbatim}
% Here the numbers \textit{123 are slanted}. {\specialdigits Here
% the numbers \textit{123 are uprigt.}}
% \end{verbatim}
%
%
%

%
%\section{Implementation}
%\label{sec:impl}
%
%\subsection{Identification}
%\label{sec:ident}
%
%
% We start with the declaration who we are. Most |.dtx| files put
% driver code in a separate driver file |.drv|. We roll this code into the
% main file, and use the pseudo-guard |<gobble>| for it.
%
% \begin{macrocode}
%<style>\NeedsTeXFormat{LaTeX2e}
%<*gobble>
\ProvidesFile{mdputu.dtx}
%</gobble>
%<style>\ProvidesClass{mdputu}
%<drv>\ProvidesFile{drv.tex}
%<*!mtx>
[2010/11/02 v1.2 Adobe Utopia Font with Unslanted Digits]
%</!mtx>
% \end{macrocode}
% And the driver code:
% \begin{macrocode}
%<*gobble>
\documentclass{ltxdoc}
\usepackage{booktabs,amsmath}
\usepackage{url}
\usepackage[breaklinks,colorlinks,linkcolor=black,citecolor=black,
 pagecolor=black,urlcolor=black,hyperindex=false]{hyperref}
\PageIndex
\CodelineIndex
\RecordChanges
\EnableCrossrefs
\begin{document}
 \DocInput{mdputu.dtx}
\end{document}
%</gobble>
% \end{macrocode}
%
%
%\subsection{Fontinst Driver}
%\label{sec:drv}
%
%
% First, we read the \textsf{Fontinst} program |fontinst.sty|:
% \begin{macrocode}
%<*drv>
\input fontinst.sty
% \end{macrocode}
%
% Standard substitutions.
% \begin{macrocode}
\substitutesilent{bx}{b}
% \end{macrocode}
%
%
% First, we create |.pl| files
% \begin{macrocode}
\generalpltomtx{mdputri7t}{mdputri7t}{vpl}{}
\generalpltomtx{mdputr7t}{mdputr7t}{vpl}{}
\generalpltomtx{mdputbi7t}{mdputbi7t}{vpl}{}
\generalpltomtx{mdputb7t}{mdputb7t}{vpl}{}
\generalpltomtx{mdputri8t}{mdputri8t}{vpl}{}
\generalpltomtx{mdputr8t}{mdputr8t}{vpl}{}
\generalpltomtx{mdputbi8t}{mdputbi8t}{vpl}{}
\generalpltomtx{mdputb8t}{mdputb8t}{vpl}{}
% \end{macrocode}
%
% Now font installation
% the first one:
% \begin{macrocode}
\installfonts
\installfamily{OT1}{mdputu}{}
\installfont{mdputuri7t}{%
 mdputri7t,deldigits,mdputr7t}{ot1}{OT1}{mdputu}{m}{si}{}
\installfont{mdputubi7t}{%
 mdputbi7t,deldigits,mdputb7t}{ot1}{OT1}{mdputu}{bx}{si}{}
\installfamily{T1}{mdputu}{}
\installfont{mdputuri8t}{%
 mdputri8t,deldigits,mdputr8t}{t1}{T1}{mdputu}{m}{si}{}
\installfont{%
 mdputubi8t}{mdputbi8t,deldigits,mdputb8t}{t1}{T1}{mdputu}{bx}{si}{}
\endinstallfonts
\bye
%</drv>
% \end{macrocode}
%
%
%
%
%\subsection{Deleting Digits}
%\label{sec:deldigits}
%
%
%
% Everything between |\relax| and |\metrix| is just a comment:
% \begin{macrocode}
%<*mtx>
\relax
Unset all digits and punctuation
\metrics
% \end{macrocode}
%
% The file itself uses the command |\unsetglyph|. We unset the
% digits, parenthesizes, etc.
% \begin{macrocode}
\unsetglyph{exclam}
\unsetglyph{parenleft}
\unsetglyph{parenright}
\unsetglyph{comma}
\unsetglyph{period}
\unsetglyph{slash}
\unsetglyph{zero}
\unsetglyph{one}
\unsetglyph{two}
\unsetglyph{three}
\unsetglyph{four}
\unsetglyph{five}
\unsetglyph{six}
\unsetglyph{seven}
\unsetglyph{eight}
\unsetglyph{nine}
\unsetglyph{colon}
\unsetglyph{semicolon}
\unsetglyph{exclamdown}
\unsetglyph{questiondown}
\unsetglyph{question}
\unsetglyph{bracketleft}
\unsetglyph{bracketright}
\unsetglyph{braceleft}
\unsetglyph{braceright}
\endmetrics
%</mtx>
% \end{macrocode}
%
%
%
%\subsection{Style File}
%\label{sec:style}
%
% Now we are ready to work on the style file. First, some |fd|
% commands. They belong here rather than in a proper |fd| file
% because we want to add to the |mdput| files, not to overwrite them:
% \begin{macrocode}
%<*style>
\InputIfFileExists{ot1mdput.fd}{}{\ClassError{mdputu}{You do not have
 mathdesign package installed!}}
\InputIfFileExists{t1mdput.fd}{}{\ClassError{mdputu}{You do not have
 mathdesign package installed!}}
\DeclareFontShape{OT1}{mdput}{m}{si}{
 <-> s * [0.92] mdputuri7t
}{}
\DeclareFontShape{OT1}{mdput}{bx}{si}{
 <-> s * [0.92] mdputubi7t
}{}
\DeclareFontShape{OT1}{mdput}{b}{si}{<-> ssub * mdputu/bx/si}{}
\DeclareFontShape{T1}{mdput}{m}{si}{
 <-> s * [0.92] mdputuri8t
}{}
\DeclareFontShape{T1}{mdput}{bx}{si}{
 <-> s * [0.92] mdputubi8t
}{}
\DeclareFontShape{T1}{mdput}{b}{si}{<->ssub * mdputu/bx/si}{}
% \end{macrocode}
%
%
% Now we are ready for font changing commands.
%
% \begin{macro}{\sishape}
% First, the declaration:
% \begin{macrocode}
\DeclareRobustCommand\sishape{%
 \not@math@alphabet\itshape\mathit
 \fontshape{si}\selectfont}
% \end{macrocode}
% \end{macro}
% \begin{macro}{\textsi}
% And the command:
% \begin{macrocode}
\DeclareTextFontCommand{\textsi}{\sishape}
% \end{macrocode}
% \end{macro}
% \begin{macro}{\specialdigits}
% This macro checks whether the current shape is italics; if yes, it
% switches to special italics
% \begin{macrocode}
\def\specialdigits{\def\itdefault{si}}
% \end{macrocode}
% \end{macro}
%
%
%
% \begin{macrocode}
%</style>
% \end{macrocode}
%
%
%\Finale
%\clearpage
%
%\PrintChanges
%\clearpage
%\PrintIndex
%
\endinput
