 DayRoman font pack for LaTeX
 as of 2002-01-16
============================================================
 Walter Schmidt
 <w-a-schmidt@arcor.de>

This collection includes the Day-Roman and Day-Roman-Expert
Type1 fonts and all required files to them with LaTeX on the
Un*x or PC platform.

These fonts are a digitally redrawn version of what has come
to be historically known as the "Two Line Double Pica
Roman", a typeface designed by 16th century French
punchcutter Francois Guyot. The character set suits today's
requirements (including even an Euro sign), and use of the
historic "long s" is supported as an option.

The below installation instructions assume a TDS-compliant
TeX system, such as teTeX, MikTeX or VTeX/Free. The
directory name "texmf" refers to the root directory of the
TDS directory tree. In case your TeX systems has more than
one such directory tree, the documentation should tell you
where to install new files.

News
----
2002-01-16
This release fixes several deficiencies: The f-f ligature,
which is provided in the font, is now used. The font family
dayroms will now make use of the c-t ligature, too. The s-s
ligature (in the font family dayroms only) has been
corrected to match the style of the other ligatures. I have
also tried to improve the shapes of the zdot and of the
letters with ogonek acccent. Last, but not least, I have
fixed a grossly misleading typo in the documentation --
please, re-read texmf/doc/fonts/dayroman/dayroman.txt. The
fixes affect only the TeX support files in the archive file
dayroman.zip, whereas the the actual fonts in the archive
day_t1.zip are unchanged.

Installing the Type1 font files
-------------------------------
Unpack the Type1 font files

 DAYROM_X.pfb
 DAYROM__.pfb

from the archive file day_t1.zip and move them to the
directory texmf/fonts/type1/public/dayroman of your TeX
system. Unpack also the related .afm files

 DAYROM__.afm
 DAYROM_X.afm

and move them to texmf/fonts/afm/public/dayroman.
Most likely, you need to create the directories first.
The remaining files from the archive day_t1.zip are only
required to use the fonts with applications other than TeX.

Installing the TeX support files from the archive dayroman
----------------------------------------------------------
Unpack the ZIP archive dayroman.zip in the directory "texmf"
of your TeX system; thus, all files will be copied to the
appropriate directories.

Configuring your TeX system
---------------------------
The programs of your TeX system must be configured to use an
additional font map file for the Day Roman fonts. The
required actions vary according to your TeX system. There
are different sets of instructions provided for

 * teTeX-1.0 and teTeX-beta before June 2002,
 * teTeX-2.0 and later, teTeX-beta as of 6/2002 and later,
 * VTeX/Free,
 * other TDS-compliant TeX systems, for instance fpTeX,
 MikTeX or emTeX/TDS.

Configuring teTeX-1.0 (or teTeX-beta before June 2002)
------------------------------------------------------
Additional font map files are installed using the shell
script "updmap". Add a record for dayroman.map to the
variable extra_modules in the shell script
texmf/dvips/config/updmap:

 extra_modules="
 dayroman.map
 ... possibly further records ...
 "

Enter the directory texmf/dvips/config/updmap and execute
the changed shell script:

 cd texmf/dvips/config
 ./updmap

In case the "updmap" script in your teTeX system has no
"extra_modules" variable or does not exist at all, please
refer to the below section "Configuring other TDS-compliant
TeX systems".

Configuring teTeX-2.0 and later
(or teTeX-beta as of June 2002 and later)
-----------------------------------------
Additional font map files are installed using the shell
script "updmap". Execute the following commands:

 texhash
 updmap --enable Map dayroman.map

Configuring VTeX/Free (version 7.00 and later)
----------------------------------------------
Make VTeX read the additional font map ("aliasing") file
dayroman.ali. This is usually accomplished by putting a
record for dayroman.ali into each of the configuration files

 texmf/vtex/config/pdf.fm
and
 texmf/vtex/config/ps.fm

The name "dayroman.ali" is to be added to the TYPE1 section of
the above-mentioned files:

 TYPE1 {
 ... other records ...
 dayroman.ali
 }

Configuring other TDS-compliant TeX systems
-------------------------------------------
After unpacking of the archive file dayroman.zip, a new font
map file dayroman.map resides in the directory
texmf/dvips/config. It works for both dvips and pdfTeX.

dvips:
Make dvips read the additional font map file dayroman.map.
Unless the documentation of your TeX system tells
something different, this is accomplished by adding the
 line

 p +dayroman.map

to the dvips configuration file. With teTeX, fpTeX or
 MikTeX this is texmf/dvips/config/config.ps; with
emTeX/TDS additions should go into the "local"
 configuration file texmf\dvips\config\dvips.ini (or
 ..\local\dvips.ini).

pdfTeX:
Make pdfTeX read the additional font map file
dayroman.map. Unless the documentation of your TeX system
tells something different, this is accomplished by adding
 the line

 map +dayroman.map

to the pdfTeX configuration file. With teTeX, fpTeX or
MikTeX this is texmf/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg. Make sure
that pdfTeX finds the map file in the directory
texmf/dvips/config. If necessary, copy the map file to a
directory which is searched by pdfTeX.

Notice that the above steps configure only dvips and pdfTeX.
As to other applications, such as dvipdfm or the DVI viewer,
please consult the documentation of your TeX system!

"Euro" support
--------------
Using the \texteuro symbol of the DayRoman font with LaTeX
requires a recent version of the encoding vector 8r.enc,
which resides usually in the directory texmf/dvips/psnfss.
The very latest release of the file 8r.enc is available as
<http://tug.org/fontname/8r.enc>. With version 9 or later
of the PSNFSS bundle, 8r.enc supports the Euro symbol
already.

Updating the filename database
------------------------------
Certain TeX systems require updating a "filename database"
manually after adding new files. Consult the documentation
of your TeX system!

Using the Day Roman typeface with LaTeX
---------------------------------------
See the file dayroman.txt, which should have been copied to
the directory texmf/doc/fonts/dayroman.
