+<H2 CLASS="section"><A NAME="htoc2">2</A>  Installation<A NAME="@default21"></A></H2><P>
+<A NAME="insta"></A></P><P>T<sub>E</sub>Xworks is only a text editor; to be able to create documents with (L<sup>A</sup>)T<sub>E</sub>X and to typeset them to PDF, we also need what is called a <EM>T<sub>E</sub>X distribution</EM><A NAME="@default22"></A>. This is a collection of programs and other files which will be automatically called by T<sub>E</sub>Xworks during its work. Thus you need to install a distribution: we will do that <EM>before</EM> starting T<sub>E</sub>Xworks for the first time, as in this way T<sub>E</sub>Xworks will automatically find what it needs.</P>
+<P><B>TeX Live</B><A NAME="@default23"></A> (<A HREF="http://www.tug.org/texlive/)"><TT>http://www.tug.org/texlive/)</TT></A>, a combination of teTeX, macTeX and XEmTeX, is available for the three operating systems (Linux, Mac OS X, Windows). The current version is TeX Live 2008.</P><P>For Linux<A NAME="@default24"></A>: every Linux distribution includes a T<sub>E</sub>X distribution, but it may not be installed by default and you will have to use the Linux package management tools to do that. As well as TeXlive, one can use <B>teTeX</B> (<A HREF="http://www.tug.org/teTeX/"><TT>http://www.tug.org/teTeX/</TT></A>, a predecessor system to TeXlive.</P><P>For the Mac<A NAME="@default25"></A>: <B>MacTeX</B><A NAME="@default26"></A>, new distribution based on gwTeX and XeTeX, is available; see <A HREF="http://www.tug.org/mactex/"><TT>http://www.tug.org/mactex/</TT></A>.</P>

MikTeX has an update programme, which has also been ported to Linux. You can also use the XEmTeX distribution (<A HREF="http://www.xemtex.org/"><TT>http://www.xemtex.org/</TT></A>).</P>

+<P>After the installation of the T<sub>E</sub>X distribution, obtain T<sub>E</sub>Xworks by downloading the archived programmes from the T<sub>E</sub>Xworks web site: <A HREF="htp://tug.org/texworks/"><TT>htp://tug.org/texworks/</TT></A>; you will find binaries for Mac and Windows at: <A HREF="http://code.google.com/p/texworks/downloads/list"><TT>http://code.google.com/p/texworks/downloads/list</TT></A>.</P>
+<P>You need to get: <TT>TeXworksW32-v0.1r352.zip</TT> the programme itself and <SUP><A NAME="text2" HREF="manual010.html#note2">1</A></SUP>, some necessary library files <SUP><A NAME="text3" HREF="manual010.html#note3">2</A></SUP>.</P>
+<P>We create a folder, for example <CODE>C:\Program files\TeXworks</CODE><A NAME="@default30"></A>, and unzip the downloaded files in it. Create, on the Desktop or in the Quick Launch bar a short-cut to the <CODE>TeXworks.exe</CODE> file.</P><P>When you start the program the first time, it creates a folder named <CODE>TeXworks</CODE><A NAME="@default31"></A><A NAME="@default32"></A> in your home folder (on Windows XP, <TT>C:\Documents and Settings\&lt;your name&gt;</TT>, on Vista, <TT>C:\Users\&lt;your name&gt;</TT>). This folder will contain some sub-folders for auto-completion<A NAME="@default33"></A>, configuration<A NAME="@default34"></A>, dictionaries<A NAME="@default35"></A>, templates<A NAME="@default36"></A>, and localisation<A NAME="@default37"></A> files — we will see these details later.<SUP><A NAME="text4" HREF="manual010.html#note4">3</A></SUP></P><P>NB. At the time of writing, if <TT>&lt;your name&gt;</TT> contains any non-ASCII characters (for example accented characters) some T<sub>E</sub>Xworks functions will not work correctly. For example, the spell-checker and forward/reverse synchronization between the source and .pdf will be impaired.</P><H3 CLASS="subsection"><A NAME="toc2"></A><A NAME="htoc4">2.2</A>  Under Linux<A NAME="@default38"></A></H3><P>After the installation of the T<sub>E</sub>X distribution, for T<sub>E</sub>Xworks, download the archived programmes from the web site: <TT>https://launchpad.net/ texworks/</TT> and look for <TT>+archive/ppa</TT>.</P>
+<P>Under Linux, if a build of T<sub>E</sub>Xworks exists for your system, use it, otherwise you will probably need to build the program from the source: see the annex section <A HREF="manual007.html#compil">6.4</A>. Once the program is installed, start T<sub>E</sub>Xworks. A folder <CODE>.texworks</CODE><A NAME="@default39"></A> will be created in your home directory.</P>

+<P>You need to get: <TT>TeXworks-0.1r333.zip</TT>, this is a file with everything <SUP><A NAME="text5" HREF="manual010.html#note5">4</A></SUP>.</P><P>It is a standalone <TT>.app</TT> package that does not require any Qt files installed into <TT>/Library/Frameworks</TT>, or other libraries into <TT>/usr/local/lib</TT>. Just copy the <TT>.app</TT> to anywhere you like, and run it.</P><P>On Mac OS X, the T<sub>E</sub>Xworks resource<A NAME="@default41"></A> folder will be created in your <CODE>Library</CODE> folder (<CODE>~/Library/.TeXworks/</CODE>), inside your <CODE>home</CODE> directory. Preferences are stored in <A HREF="~/Library/Preferences/org.tug.TeXworks.plist"><TT>~/Library/Preferences/org.tug.TeXworks.plist</TT></A>
+which you can delete if you ever suspect it is causing problems.</P><H3 CLASS="subsection"><A NAME="toc4"></A><A NAME="htoc6">2.4</A>  Ready!</H3><P>Finally some files may need to be added to the “personal” files that T<sub>E</sub>Xworks creates. As the exact location is dependent on your platform, this will be referred to as <TT>&lt;home&gt;\TeXworks</TT><A NAME="@default42"></A> or the <B>T<sub>E</sub>Xworks resource folder</B> later in this manual. On Windows XP this will be at <TT>C:\Documents and Settings\&lt;your name&gt;\TeXworks</TT>, on Linux it is <CODE>~/TeXworks</CODE> and <CODE>~/Library/.TeXworks/</CODE> on the Mac.</P><P>After installation and first run, have a look in the sub-folders of the T<sub>E</sub>Xworks resources folder and delete any <CODE>qt_temp.xxxx</CODE> files; they are temporary files left behind and they could later on interfere with the normal ones, which are installed in the same folder.
