There is no file name extension to be specified as a parameter. The possible file formats depend on whether \LaTeX{} or pdf\LaTeX{} is used. In the case of \LaTeX{}, files with the extension `eps' are searched for at first, followed by `mps' (\MP-generated Postscript) and `ps'.
