+ 1. METAFONT files
+
+!! 1. The ogonek does not work in several modes, especially im small sizes
+ or at low resolutions. (fcaccent.mf)
+
+** 2. For italic fonts, the f-ligatures are still misssing. Hope, I find
+ the time to add them soon. (fcilig.mf) Added 17-NOV-1994.
+
+** 3. b-fcsstt.mf calls now c-fcsstt.mf instead of c-cmsstt.mf.
+ Renamed c-cmsstt.mf to c-fcsstt.mf. (28-DEC-1992)
+
+** 4. Added more parameter files to make the system complete (6-MAY-1993)
+
+!! 5. The fc fonts should have included a `dotless i with dot below' for
+ further accenting. Since the fc encoding scheme is fixed, this
+ cannot be cured. However, the necessary code was added to
+ lowerij.mf and italij.mf to have it available on demand.
+
+** 6. Computing larger sizes caused an arithmetic overflow in b-fccsc.mf.
+ Fixed by reducing some fractions.
+
+** 7. Corrected error concerning \~\i in monospaced fonts (lowerij.mf)
+ (8-MAY-1993).
+
+!! 8. With the mode for the HP laserjet, the explicit space sign [32]
+ causes an error in 5pt size for several parameter sets. The error
+ causes no visible damage.
+
+*! 9. With the hefty parameter sets b-fcssbx, b-fcsibx, b-fcsstt, and
+ b-fcsitt, the following characters show up errors:
+ Capital letters hooktop B, hooktop C, hooktop D, hooktop K, hooktop P,
+ and hooktop T (quite frequently),
+ lowercase ipa gamma [166] and round v [174] only with ssbx and sibx
+ in some small sizes.
+
+ Makro |left_hook| in fcmacros.mf redone, fixing the errors on
+ hooktop B, D, P, and T (6-OCT-1996)
+
+!! 10. With the b-fcitt parameters, the italic lower ezh [182] shows up an
+ bad position error for some sizes (12, 7, 5).
+
+ Remark: The bad (pen)pos-erros in Capital Hooktop C, Hooktop K,
+ ipa gamma, round v and italic ezh don't cause any visible harm.
+
+** 11. Corrected silly typo in lowerij.mf (Reported by Ron Whitney
+ 20-JUN-1993)
+
+** 12. Lowercase hooktop d had a serif even in sans serif faces. Corrected
+ 21-JUN-1993.
+
+** 13. Changed the ligtables to contain the following ligatures:
+ For all fonts: "-""hyphenchar" -> "hyphenchar"
+ For monospaced fonts: "-""-" -> "n-dash" (looks identical to "-")
+ Both changes were originally proposed by Alan Jeffrey for T1 (Cork)
+ encoded fonts. (15-NOV-1994)
+
+** 14. Redesigned en-dash and em-dash to look like hyphen in monospaced
+ fonts. (15-NOV-1994)
+
+** 15. b-fccsc.mf loaded fcttligt.mf instead of fcscligt.mf. (15-NOV-1994)
+
+** 16. The letter var_u (round v) looked very spindly on its upper right.
+ This was caused by a side effekt of |sloped_serif.l| on |vbulb|.
+ Cured by commuting two lines in the programme. (17-NOV-1994)
+
+** 17. Added font_coding_scheme:="African Latin (fc)" to coding.fc.
+ (18-NOV-1994)
+
+** 18. Since the italic ligatures are now ready, I added them to the
+ ligtable fcitligt.mf. (18-NOV-1994)
+
+** 19. Added t_esh_lig to the ligtable of f-like characters which need
+ antikerning against apostrophes. (25-NOV-1994)
+
+** 20. By mistake, t_esh_lig occurred twice in the ligtable. Corrected
+ 6-OCT-1996
+
+** 21. The change mentioned in mf/3 did not make it to the archives.
+ Corrected 6-OCT-1996
+
+** 22. The macro zero_width was missing in the compound word mark, leading
+ to wrong pk files.
+
+** 23. I gave the compound word mark x_height in order to increase its
+ functionality (6-OCT-1996)
+
+** 24. Renamed the file coding.fc to fccoding.mf in order to make
+ producing of CD-ROMs like the TeX life CD easier. Subsequent
+ changes to some other files.
+
+** 25. The height of the compound word mark should be given in
+ sharp dimensions (12-MAR-2004)
+
+** 26. There is a nasty bug in the capital letter EZH, causing a
+ "Value too large" error in really high res mode (2540 dpi).
+ Closer inspection shows a very strange formula for z97 to be
+ changed (12-MAR-2004)
+
+** 27. Bug 26 applies also to the lower ezh. Found by Werner Lemberg.
+ (6-APR-2004)
+
+ 2. TeX files
+
+** 1. The \sfcodes were missing for the upper 128 characters. Fixed in
+ version 1.1b of fclfont.sty. (24-NOV-1992)
+
+** 2. Added the definition of \$ and \pound of the NFSS to fclfont.sty.
+ This is redundant at the moment, but may not stay so. (28-DEC-1992)
+
+** 3. Corrected several typos in fcuse.sty (29-DEC-1992)
+
+** 4. Reworked fontdef.fc in the stile of fontdef.sau and gave it a more
+ compact shape. Added the new fonts. (7-MAY-1993)
+ Note that in deviation from the NFSS for cm fonts, typewriter is
+ handled as a weight rather than a family. The reason lies in the
+ existence of the sans serif typewriter fonts in the fc font
+ package.
+
+** 5. Inserted appropriate changes in fclfont.sty (definition of \ptt and
+ \ttdefault).
+
+** 6. Added \r for ring above accent to fclfont.sty (8-MAY-1993)
+
+** 7. Fixed math mode bugs in fcuse.sty (8-MAY-1993)
+
+** 8. Added +v as an alternative to +u in fcuse.sty. Removed bogus
+ definition of +h. (8-MAY-1993)
+
+** 9. \l printed as \L with fclfont.sty. (12-NOV-1994)
+
+** 10. Renamed the NFSS1 specific file fclfont.sty and fontdef.fc to
+ fclfont.sty_old and fontdef.fc_old. These two files are now obsolete
+ and frozen.
+
+** 11. Added support files for LaTeX2e: fclfont.sty, T4enc.def, T4cmr.fd,
+ T4cmss.fd, T4cmtt.fd, T4fcr.fd. (11/12-NOV-1994)
+ Note that the new fclfont.sty is incompatible with fclfont.sty_old.
+
+** 12. Unfortunately, the idea of using \~{\m E} for open E with Tilde
+ did not really work with LaTeX2e. Therefore, a new control sequence
+ \T was assigned for the four provided modified letters with tilde
+ (E,e,O,o). (T4enc.def, 15-NOV-1994).

+** 13. The protection mechanism of LaTeX2e currently inhibits kerning and

+ I. Introduction
+
+ TeX is a typesetting system for high quality typesetting. It is available
+ free due to the generosity of its developper, Prof D. E. Knuth. It is
+ available for many different platforms, from microcomputers (PC, Atari, Mac)
+ to mainframes and even supercomputers. TeX files can be interchanged between
+ different systems and will produce identical output. TeX is well documented
+ in D. E. Knuth, Computers and typesetting, Vol. A -- The Texbook.
+
+ The release of TeX Version 3 stimulated lots of work in the area of adapting
+ TeX to the needs of other languages than english. One outstanding project was
+ the creation of a font encoding scheme with 256 characters for international
+ use. It soon turned out, that with 256 code points only the needs of european
+ languages could be satisfied (the EC scheme proceeds this way), and there had
+ to be other fonts for non-european languages. The FC (aFrican Computer)
+ scheme fits the needs of african languages with latin writing. This scheme
+ comes together with an implementation of the fonts in METAFONT. The fonts
+ created by METAFONT can also be used by other system than TeX.
+
+ II. About the FC-Scheme
+
+ a) The language base
+
+ There is a great diversity of languages spoken in africa, and it was
+ impossible to check all of them for their alphabets. This work is based on
+ the examination of the ``critical languages'' according to a definition of
+ the US department of education in 1985. They include all those languages
+ with more than 1 mio speakers.
+
+ Only orthographical writing is considered. Transscription systems devolopped
+ by linguists are outside the scope of this work. Obsolete orthographies are
+ also not included (for example the obsolete uppercase form of hooktop B in
+ Xhosa and Zulu or the obsolete (catholic) orthography of \d{I}gb\d{o}).
+
+ Even these constraints showed the lack of code space. Therefore some accented
+ letters did not enter the fc scheme. Generally, accented letters were omitted,
+ if the accent denotes a tonal mark. This is in consistency with the current
+ trend in orthography to suppress tonal marks, except if ambiguities occur.
+ Also omitted are consonants with tilde to denote nasalisation. The mentioned
+ letters can be created in TeX by the use of macros (e.g. \~y).
+
+ The following languages are supported:
+
+ Akan, Bamileke, Basa (Kru), Bemba, Ciokwe, Dinka, Dholuo (Luo), Efik,
+ Ewe-Fon, Fulani (Fulful), G\~a, Gbaya, Hausa, Igbo, Kanuri, Kikuyu,
+ Kikongo, Kpelle, Krio, Luba, Mandekan (Bambara), Mende, More, Ngala,
+ Nyanja, Oromo, Rundi, Kinya Rwanda, Sango, Serer, Shona, Somali, Songhai,
+ Sotho (two different writing systems), Suaheli, Tiv, Yao, Yoruba, Xhosa
+ and Zulu.
+
+ I decided to support two european languages, which are not covered by the
+ EC-scheme, namely Maltese and Sami.
+
+ Currency symbols (Like Naira and Cedi) aren't part of the fc fonts. They
+ are available from the tc (Text companion symbols) fonts distributed
+ together with the ec (European Computer Modern) fonts.
+
+ b) Technical points
+
+ The fc encoding scheme will not be changed anymore. Every font, which begins
+ with the two characters fc should be encoded according to the fc scheme.
+
+ The fonts named fcr etc. contain what you expect from TeX naming conventions.
+ They are currently maintained by the author.
+
+ The code points are choosen from scratch, according to the following rules:
+
+ * The lower 128 codes are identical to the Cork (ec) scheme
+
+ * A glyph also occurring in the Cork scheme is placed on the same code point
+ as in the Cork scheme
+
+ * Each letter from TeX's original cm-fonts is saved. Thus, you can print
+ polish L, skandinavian crossed O and some other letters with the fc fonts.
+
+ * The difference between uppercase and corresponding lowercase letter is
+ a constant.
+
+ c) Copying conditions
+
+ The fc fonts are copyrighted but free according to the conditions of the GNU
+ licence, version 2. You should receive a copy of the file licence.gnu
+ containing this licence. If not, complain to the person from which you
+ received these fonts. Read the licence carefully.
+
+
+ III) How to generate the fonts with METAFONT
+
+ Besides the files of the fc package, you need the following:
+
+ * plain.mf (or a METAFONT with plain preloaded)
+ * cmbase.mf (or a METAFONT with cmbase preloaded)
+
+ * The files romand.mf, itald.mf, and olddig.mf (the original digits from the
+ cm fonts)
+
+ * The Sauter tools. These are a bunch of files, named like c-cmr.mf and so on.
+ They are available from the CTAN archive sites and their mirros. The CTAN
+ sites are ftp.dante.de and ftp.tex.ac.uk.
+ The Sauter tools are located there under tex-archive/fonts/cm/sauter.
+
+ Make sure, that all files are in appropriate directories, where METAFONT
+ finds them.
+
+ Now you are ready to create the fc fonts at any size you want, for example to
+ create the font fcr10 do the following:
+
+ mf "\mode=localfont; design_size:=10; input b-fcr"
+ gftopk b-fcr.300gf fcr10.pk
+ rename b-fcr.tfm fcr10.tfm
+
+ and move the .pk and .tfm-files to their directories. The exact form of the
+ calls depends a little on your operating system.
+
+ You might find it helpful to make yourself little mf-files of the type
+
+ % fcr10.mf
+ design_size:=10;
+ input b-fcr;
+ endinput;
+ % end of fcr10.mf
+
+ These files are especially usefull, if you have an automagic procedure
+ invoking METAFONT. Note, that for the sizes 11pt and >12pt, the design_size
+ is not identical to the last digits of the fontname. It is
+
+ fcr11 design_size:=10.95;
+ fcr14 design_size:=14.4;
+ fcr17 design_size:=17.28;
+ fcr20 design_size:=20.74;
+ fcr24 design_size:=24.88;
+
+ Note that there is only one fc italic font, called fci. It is not planned to
+ add fc math fonts to the distribution. Use the cm math fonts (or the not yet
+ released ec math fonts).
+
+ IV) How to use the FC-Fonts with LaTeX2e
+
+ The LaTeX3 team has assigned the encoding T4 to fc encoded fonts. So you
+ can use the fc fonts in LaTeX2e simply by saying
+ \usepackage[T4]{fontenc}
+
+ This call loads the following files, which must be located in the search
+ path of LaTeX2e:
+
+ t4enc.def, t4cmr.fd, t4cmss.fd, t4cmtt.fd.
+
+ There is another option which aemulates the behaviour of the previous
+ LaTeX209 with NFSS1 implementation. It gives you easy access to the
+ sans serif typerwriter font included in this package by simply typing
+ \ss\tt or \tt\ss. This option is called by
+
+ \usepackage{fclfont}
+
+ and requires the four abovementioned file plus
+
+ fclfont.sty and t4fcr.fd.
+
+ The files fclfont.sty_old and fontdef.fc_old from the previous release

+\section*{Implementation}
+The implementation follows closely to the one of the cm fonts. The
+distinction between parameter files, driver files and programme files is
+kept. The parameters are computed from the design size of the fonts with
+the help of the Sauter tools. This allows an easy nonlinear scaling. I
+added only one new parameter, {\tt univ\_acc\_breath}, which governs the
+shape of the universal accent. To adjust the height of accented capitals
+the parameter {\tt comma\_depth} was employed. The result is excellent with
+serif fonts, but not that good with sans serif ones. I made up one new
+parameter file, creating a {\sstt sans serif typewriter} fontshape. There
+were only minor modifications needed in the programmes of the letters i, I,
+and l to make it work.
+
+There is not much to say about the driver files, except that there are
+additional kerns for {\fc kV, kW, mV, mW, and eV}. The ligatures from
+the Cork scheme to get german and french quotes are included, too.

+alphabet. The shape of the letter is saved as a picture and only the
+diacritic is calculated to get an accented letter. This is done to save cpu
+time and to make the maintenance of the files easier. The accented letters
+are generated only on demand, i.e.\ if their code is known. The codes are
+given in the file {\tt coding.fc}. It is possible to use the same source
+to create other real fonts by replacing the coding file. The so-created
+fonts may not be called fc, since this abbreviation is reserved to fonts
+which are fc-encoded.
+
+\section*{Outlook}
+The fonts are done now, but there is lot of work left in creating suitable
+styles for african languages and virtual fonts, if needed. For this work,
+the speakers and users of the african languages are qualified best, and I
+hope that there will be some results of this work soon.
