class="small-caps">F</small></span> system layer (like the basic layer or a frontend) will interface with the system layer by calling a
stream of commands starting with <span class="obeylines-h"><span class="verb"><span
class="cmtt-10">\pgfsys@</span></span></span>. From the system layer’s point of view, these commands form a long
stream. Between calls to the system layer, control goes back to the user.
