TeX-Icons (filename texicons.zip) 15/5/1993
===========================================================================

Don Knuth designed a bunch of icons for TeX system files for the
OpenWindows FileManager application.

I have converted the OpenWindows icons to their corresponding X11 XBM
and (uncompressed) TIFF format in the dimension of 32x32 pixels.

A coloured version is done for the OpenWindows and the DOS/Windows
system and distributed in different format files.

Hippocrates Sendoukas <sendouk@scf.usc.edu> converted the B/W TIFF icons to
the appropriate Windows format and wrote a tool to convert the coloured
PixMap file fomat into the Windows Colour BitMap file format.

Contents:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
knuthico : Original Knuth's ditribution as anounced by
Karl Berry <karl@cs.umb.edu> (filenames shortened for
 DOS micros)
xbm : X11 XBitMap format (32x32 pixels)
xpm : X11 Colour XPixMap format (32x32 pixels),
(a palette file is included, to change easily the colours)
tif : uncompressed TIFF format, B/W version
windll : icons converted for DOS/Windows and placed in two single
 DLL files:
 - monochrome,
original version and one with transparent background
 - coloured,
original version and one with transparent background
winico : the same as in "windll", but all icons are stored
 separately in single files,
some tiny C programs are included to make DLLs
tool : XPitMap to DOS/Windos BitMap conversion tool written
 by Hippocrates Sendoukas

History:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mon May 3 20:41:33 1993:
Karl Berry <karl@cs.umb.edu> announced OpenWindows icons by Don Knuth
in the Info-TeX discussion list.

Tue May 4 11:49:33 1993:
I've converted the original Knuth's icons in the TIFF format, and sent
notice to Karl Berry. He replied:
> I don't use DOS, but thanks for letting me know.
Another idea occured in my brain adding some colour to the B/W icons.
What I needed is a colour monitor...

Tue May 4 11:57:01 1993:
I wanted to have the icons available for the DOS/Windows users, and
contacted Hippocrates Sendoukas <sendouk@scf.usc.edu> for some tips
on how to do it. (I don't use DOS/Windows.)
I've sent him my converted icons in the 32x32 pixels TIFF format.

Wed May 5 01:16:53 1993:
Hippocrates Sendoukas converted my TIFF files in the corresponding
DOS/Windows format and put them in a single DLL file.

Wed May 5 18:25:27 1993:
Norman Walsh <walsh@cs.umass.edu> announced in the emTeX discussion list
that he had converted Knuth's icons in some formats as well.

Wed May 5 20:41:36 1993:
I've added some colour to the icons, but couldn't save them in the
XBitMap format any more, but in the XPixMap format. Done.
My conversion tool doesn't recognise the PixMap format, so
couldn't convert them in the TIFF format...
Asked Hippocrates Sendoukas if he can handle the PixMap format.

Thu May 6 21:01:00 1993:
George D. Greenwade <bed_gdg@shsu.edu> placed Norman Walsh's version
and our version of the converted icons in the CTAN (Comprehensive
TeX Archive Network), and are now available for public.

Fri May 7 21:49:05 1993:
Hippocrates Sendoukas gave me some tips on how to handle the PiXMap
format for converting them into coloured BitMap.
He hasn't a tool himself so I might solve the problem during the
weekend.

Wed May 12 06:37:29 1993:
Hippocrates Sendoukas wrote a tool and sent it to me that converts
a PixMap format file into BitMap format file for DOS/Windows.

Thu May 13 18:04:38 1993:
I've converted the PixMap file format into the Colour BitMap file
format for DOS/Windows.

Fri May 14 16:13:23 1993:
Hippocrates Sendoukas sent me a modified and improved version of
his format converter.

Fri May 14 18:34:26 1993:
I've sent all my work to Hippocrates Sendoukas for revision.

Sat May 15 10:48:16 1993:
Hippocrates Sendoukas sent me a DLL file for the coloured icons, as well
as all the icons for DOS/Windows in single files.
Some few colours are changed in the icons, since they are hard to read
in DOS/Windows (but not changed in the original PixMap format).

Sat May 15 15:28:50 1993:
A new version is placed in the CTAN, including the coloured PixMap
format file and the corresponding icons for DOS/Windows system.
